Sadly, this is not an uncommon story. I loved your simplicity - each word was chosen carefully. And the ending was so bitter sweet. Well done, Lou

Thank you, Lou, for your observations and kind words. This particular man spent most of his waking hours studying the form and had an encyclopaedic knowledge which enabled him to amass a small fortune, most of which he donated to the hospital for various projects.

Oh, wow my cudos to you. What a beautiful tribute to one of the underlying sides to war, all just as important as the other. My dad was in the army air force and his stories of heroics also include those not only on battle.

This is a very interesting poem. You communicated your theme well. It has an interesting twist at the end. The word choice is strong.

I saw him, fifty years later
In a sunny corner of the ward,
studying the racing pages
from the comfort of his wheelchair.
Imagine that, 50 years later and you still haven't forgotten him. He must have made quite the impression on your mind.

Smiling at you.

You must have seen a lot. Your poem brings home not only the horrors of war but it looks at the long haul which is even more horrific.

A well-told story indeed. You packed quite a bit into these few lines and I thought the ironic twist at the end was truly clever. Very nicely done. Even though it was a sad story, it seemed to be told in a mater-of-fact way. That seems in keeping with the way most warriors look at battle.

The first read of this poem left me in a state of emotion that I was not able to pen, but settling down with the authors note, picture an emotion filled write I felt exceptional grow in my keyboard.
