I saw this story on the news and while I want workers to receive decent wages, all I could think of was, the price of the food going up. I buy from MacDonald's dollar menu occasionally to save on my food bill. Your words ring true.

Agree with you, entirely, my dear.

Amazing how much we pay for junk that is potential poison.

Hope you had a great weekend.

That's redicilous. I'm all for a fair-wage, but that is just not right. Starting wages for most factory jobs are under 15 bucks, and you got to do a lot more then flip burgers. He'll end putting McDonalds out of business and dry one of the biggest sources of employment in the world. This is something to think about. Spitfire.

He knows it won't happen, but the fact that he tried makes him a hero in some people's eyes. How the man loves to be idolized.

No, they'll start using horse meat my queen. I do feel they need to be paid more, but I think they are getting a bit greedy. It won't bother me. I may like them, but I don't buy them. Maybe twice a year at most. A great Senryu with a lot of truth in it.

LOL. From the taste I'm betting they use cardboard. Can't stand the place except for the fries.

You cannot make a living on $7.25 but I think $15 is a bit excessive. If minimum wage went up that much everything else would have to go up to keep up with paying out that much which would mean it making more wouldn't change a thing since everything else would go up in price. I think upping minimum wage to $9.00 would be more acceptable. I make under $8.50 and even though I could live on my own by myself I wouldn't be able to have internet, cable, a car, spending money for anything. Basically, nothing could go wrong otherwise I'd be fucked. I encourage minimum at like $9 but what if it goes up too much so won't everything else

You bring up excellent points. The net and cable are luxuries but you have to have a car unless you can bus everywhere.
Cars mean gas and insurance.. non-ending.

You have hit on one of my biggest bugbears sf. I have never eaten fast food in my life and there is no coincidence that since KFC and the "golden arches" you write about came to Australia in the early 70's, we started getting bigger and bigger. I don't think there is a correlation between fast food and obesity but a direct causal link. I know this has nothing to do with your senryu so I will get down from my soap box now but for me, you highlighted a difference between the U.S. and Australia. No one works for tips here. If we get good service at a restaurant, we can leave a tip or tell a taxi driver to keep the change but we have a minimum wage for all workers no matter what they do. Having gotten way off your track, I see your point. If wages go up so to can you expect the price of an addictive Bic Mac to go up too. The whole fast food thing really annoys me in case you haven't guessed. lol xx Carol

LOL, you're a hoot. I never connected obesity with fast food, but you're right! Not only that, but big health issues too. My nephew lived off MD's burgers and fries and ended up with kidney stones!

You have no idea how funny something you said is. I just had a kidney stone and as I said I never eat the stuff. lol I hardly ever drink so that may have been at least part of the problem. Fast food makes fat people in my book. :-)

I think Obama should stick to politics and leave the merchandising world alone. There's other laws governing business: supply--demand. What if he ruins the golden arches for us?

To be honest, their food isn't that good, IMO. Except for the fries and the healthy fruit and yogurt dish. And you're darn right about the laissez-faire policy being ignored.

I applaud you, Shari, for coming up with another clever piece which is so germane to recent news. The fast food industry intended for their workers to be part time students, and folks working themselves up to better paying jobs. This is just another example of how our economy is really going berserk. Hugs, Lou

You bring up some very good points. Mickey's should be a training ground, not a life-time career.

Very interesting and current write which fulfills the requirements. It really does give food for thought (pardon the pun). First of all I think the proclaimed profit margin is BS, but assuming it is true then what is Oblahma (not a typo) trying to do, put them out of business? If they had to double the price of the food to make a profit then the business would probably fold because the average american would probably choose to eat elsewhere and they wouldn't end up profiting at all. What would happen to all of their employees then-- no jobs. It might not cause other employees at fast food places to want a similar raise then, eh? BUT, I think they are lying about the margin and have some smart little peeps who could figure out just the right prices to balance the cost of raises and keep enough people coming thru the door to keep them open, although it would probably decrease their ACTUAL profit margin. It's a crap place to work and the wages should be raised some (I only made it for one hour there when I was 20 before I quit), but lets be reasonable and fair, you don't have to have a degree to work there, so would all positions which require more skils/degree and currently pay $15 an hour have their pay increased as well? I think the outcry would not just be from other fast food chains if the chain stayed afloat, but what would be the results of all the pay increases? There's a lot to consider, and one of those considerations is that not all min wage workers are uneducated or lacking in other skills. I work in a min wage job (not fast food) because it is the job that I could get and I am a single mother who is trying to support my family and work is work, overqualified or not. So which analyst is correct, and which side is right? Hell if I know, lol, but thanks for the brain food! : )

Appreciate your input on this, poesy. There would surely be a domino effect. It is demanding work, I'm sure, and should encourage employees to get higher education. But even those who spent thousands of dollars to get a degree can't get a job these days. You take what you can get just as you did. And remember when mimimum wage was three dollars an hour?

Hey, I'm poor. If I could get a job at MacDonald's for $15 an hour, I'd be first in line. Honestly, that's a lot money for flinging burger. Definitely food for thought.

Hey, Micky Dee could pay then double but halve their work hours which means no benefits. Wonder how this play out.
