I don't know why, but I didn't get a notice about this chapter. You did a wonderful job with this one. You even got me to cry. Verge's death is so sad, but he did live along life. Excellent work with this one. I wish I had a 6 to give you for it. I only noticed it because you won third place for book of the month. Congratulations. It is well deserved.

Hi Sasha - a virtual six from a writer I always try to follow is special enough! Thank you. Bill

A very tender and touching story that displays the wonderful connections that the young and old have when the need for posturing is eliminated. The first-person narrative is right up there with Huck Finn.

Bill - thank you very much for reading, the kind comments and the compliment of the six. All are appreciated. I have a current story out there right now that addresses the same issue of young and old. It's called The Shadchan. Bill

Well, it may not be a stand alone story, but your chapter brought tears to my eyes and pulled me back to a very special place where only the young and very old really understand how to love completely. Great story.

Hi Bill,

Glad to see this up for Book of the Month, while I haven't had much time to read books online, I can't resist a story with Rabbit and Verge. When I saw Verge had died, I read this chapter all the way through with its down home philosophies and country humor. I will miss Verge.

Good luck in the contest.

Jean K.

"I smiled, batted my eyes, and said, "You can call me anything you want." LOL! You started flirting way back when, uh, Bill? No wonder you got to be so good at it, you charmer!

Ah, you were such a sweet boy, and you tell such a great story. It's as if you were still Rabbit's age, Bill. That's what I'd call "Arrested Development". LOL!

You tell a fine story. I'm glad I finally got to read it. Good luck in the contest, Bill.

This is my first time reading about Rabbit. What a wonderful story. Very poignant and extremely well written. Another FanStory member suggested reading your story. I was not disappointed!

I like this chapter of your book. I hadn't read any of it before, but found it in a contest booth. I love Virge, at least what this portion of your tale says about him, and the great note and gift he left his little friend. The bit about Rabbit losing it in 5 days was great and so true to life.
Good luck in the contest, your entry is my favorite.... Quillian

Haven't been to this site in months and what do I find? A story about Virge. I remember the first time I read about him. Your words make it easy to know this old man...and the little boy who grew up to continue to honor him.
Your writing brought back many memories for me. I was raised in the South, in the country, and my Virge was an old black lady that did ironing for my grandmaw. You just catch this period of time without beating us over the head. Just a good story about good people. Thank you
So good to see you are still writing......

Seems like everyone I know are having very serious health problems and I am being both a cook and a nurse for whoever needs me.
You writing about Virge's death reminds me that there will be a sunny side if I can just get thru this sadness. Need to start writing again, it saved me while I was caring for my mom....humor can really keep you sane.
    Love hearing from you

This is a moving, heart-warming account of a friendship. You write with great skill and natural fluency. The whole thing is a considerable achievement.
