This is a unique way to celebrate lent. Even though I don't
observe it myself I think it is a good idea to give something up for awhile. It is sort of a mini fast which is very biblical. Good read and keep on writing.

Coffee? How can you give up coffee? :) I've heard of Lent, but I still had to look it up. So you do this for forty days? Seems that after that, you'd pretty much make it a habit, which means that you're still smiling and still caffeine free. :)

Smile stayed but the caffeine was too hard to give up on a permanent basis.

As a natural smiler, it warms my heart to meet a kindred spirit. You are so right, smiling and having a cheerful disposition is not necessarily for others; it's for yourself, so that you can have a merry heart as stated in the Bible. Keep on smiling and you'll see your ailments and depressions disappear. What a delightful read!

Awesome and I'll bet it is working out a lot better than you planned on. A smile is infectious and and be spread. Good choice for you.

Hello there Sweet G
I for one wholeheartedly agree. I have spent the better part of my last 25 years greeting strangers with a smile and a hello, howdy, or good morning, etc. I have found that most will mutter a response or even smile back with a look of wonder. It used to make my wife Tonia crazy but now she knows it is my way of giving back to others what they really need. I love your short story

WONDERFUL! This is precisely what I've always preached and it works! If I'm in a funky mood, I go to the grocery store and smile at strangers, sometimes start a conversation about what they're buying. I find that they are thrilled that someone noticed them, and 95% are pleasant in return. I come home feeling so much better. :)

Brave girl. You'll probably end up being stoned to death, or locked up in Guantanamo Bay. Maybe worse - Montel Williams might do a show about you.

Smiling like laughter, is oftentimes contagious, sharing a warmth with others. Like a handshake, a greeting, it's free, and makes you feel good, lightens your day. So phooey to those who didn't smile back. Let them fester in their own grumpiness. lol Great choice in pictures!
Thanks for sharing.

Gretchen,

I think your smile campaign is an excellent way of acknowledging the presence of someone. You're right; our electronic toys often have us stumbling down the street blindly, and bumping into people in the process. The technology we take for granted is not necessarily good for society. I have heard it said that air conditioning has done more to break down the closeness of community than anything else. We no longer sit on our porches and talk with the neighbors passing by...we sit inside under the A/C and watch TV.
