Yes, this is hot! For, what does the future
mean, if you don't know what his story was
like? You did a good job at painting a very
vivid picture of that. Nice job.

Wow! Thank you! I'm glad I was able to bring back the 50's if only in a poem. Thank you again!

Very nice trip down memory lane. I love the accompanying image. It set the stage perfectly for our trip. Even though the fifties predate me, you made me feel as if I were there, going along for the ride.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the photo. Searched a long time for the right one. I wasn't born till 61' myself, so I'm glad I was able to make you feel like you were there. Thanks again for this sweet review!

First of all, as I write this review, it is very late at night and your picture of the Burgers and Fries has made me extremely hungry...I was young in the fifties, but spent my share of time hanging around the drive-ins, thanks for the fun walk down memory lane, Ridley

A really enjoyable poem. You picked the right colour for the layout of this poem - and the car. I remember the fifties like it was yesterday and it was great. You've written American style - I'm English but wherever it was great. Your line counts are way out but the poem is so good it makes up for that - it's not the kind of poem you could get the count right without losing some of what you want to say. Regards Dorothy

Thank you so much, Dorothy! I appreciate you noticing the layout. Searched for a long time before I found that picture. As for line counts, like you said, it's hard to get it just right and say what you want to say. For instance, I really struggled with the "Twistin the night away" line. Seems like a couple of syllables too many. But because it was an Acrostic, the line had to start with a "T" and that was the best dancing song I could think of starting with "T" Plus, I had mentioned Sam Cooke earlier. My Mom loved him which made me a fan as well. I'm never sure what cadence the reader will have in mind when they read my poems. Sometimes it goes back in forth in MY head! Anyway, thank you for understanding and I'm so glad you liked it!!

You have written a nice verse with great rhymes about the 50's. But, you need the rest of the story...

A&W had the best coney dogs and real root beer with sassafrass. the feds got rid of that distinct flavor. A friend and I would go to the stand after work and have root beer and coney eating and drinking contests. He would get full and went home...I stopped by the DQ for a ginger ale.

The second MacDonalds was built in Springfield MO where I lived at the time. It was cheap food, but the Big Boy double burger was the best.

At one drive-in, the girls would skate up to the car and take your order, then deliver it, with tray hung on the door. You flashed your lights for pickup then.

I think the second run movies were 25 cents...Doris Day was the favorite, in another film three girls sang three coins in a fountain.

My friend and I used the term "You're all shook up" playing volley ball at a youth camp two years before Elvis sang the song.

Wow! You make me want to write a "Part Two" :) Sounds like you had fun! I do remember car hops at a place here called "The Dixie" It was great! I also loved drive-in movies. I was only 7 but I still remember the movies shown : Cat Ballou and Bonnie and Clyde. Funny you mentioned Doris Day. Always loved her. Anyway, thank YOU for the trip down memory lane! :)

I grew up in the '60s, but for some, reason, I have always been enamored by this time period in American history. American Graffiti is an awesome 1950's movie.

Your poem is well constructed, with great metre and flow, and an impeccable rhythm. It's hard to believe you didn't grow up then, because you sure have a great deal of the fads and other memorable moments listed in your poem. Like me, you must be a huge fan!

Great write...

Thank you so much, Dean! I grew up in 60's but mostly 70's. I always felt like the 70's were like a modern day 50's. Vietnam was over and things had settled down a bit. Got most of my info from stories my Mom told me about that time. Made me wish I'd been born then. Oh, I remember American Graffiti as well. Also loved Grease(though it didn't come out till 78') Think I saw it 100 times! LOL Anyway, thank you again for this sweet review!

Each booth has a jukebox, hope your pocket has a jingle
Slip a coin in the slot and hear your favorite single

You must be among the few that wish they were older rather than younger. I like songs and shows from the fifties as well.

Thank you! Yea I was the baby in my family. Always felt like I missed out on a lot. I must say, I loved growing up in the 70's though. Had a great childhood. Heck, compared to today, the 70's were like the 50's, huh? Anyway, thank you for your sweet review!

Suzie Q,

This is a cute poem. I enjoyed every word of it. I graduated from High School in the 50's. I had my first two kids in the 50's and the other four in the 60's. As you can tell, I'm old. LOL

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it. No, you're not old, just "seasoned" :) I wasn't born till 61, but I gotta say I had a great childhood in the 70's. It felt like a modern day 50's to me. Vietnam was over and everything seemed more peaceful than the 60's. Compared to today, I feel like I DID grow up in the 50's! haha Thank you again for your sweet review!

Fun flashback to the fifties. The train is a cool way to get the nostalgia going. The acrostic message flashes like fifties neon and the Lucy and Ethel ending is perfect. The only flaw is the Dairy Queen part.A fifties Dairy Queen was not a walk in place. You got served at a window. A&W's had the rollerskating waitresses and also were walk ins.

Thank you so much! Sorry about the Dairy Queen goof. Like I said, I didn't come along until 61'. Might try to redo it to make it more authentic. Thanks for the info!

Hey I just tweaked it. Got so caught up in rhyming it just dawn on me that the Dairy Queens today are window and drive thru. Embarrassing! Would love for you to give it another read and let me know if it's better. Either way, thanks again for the tip!!

Now that it's A&W, the Nehi's got to go. How about adding onion rings there and dropping the Nehi and either one of the others. Just one other thing. Air conditioning was a rare luxury back then. How about.. Let's all go in and hang out cause rootbeer hits the spot.
reply by the author on 27-Jun-2013
LOL, unfortunately I made it an Acrostic poem so the line has to start with an "N". Nehi's all I could thing of. Give me a two syllable word that starts with "N" and maybe I could swing it! Thanks for rereading it! Oh yea, about the A/C. That's why I had everybody go inside when the T-Birds were filling the parking lot. To get some COOL air. Can't imagine life without A/C!

Love the artwork, as we still have a rootbeer stand that has curb service! I grew up in the '50s; those were great years.

Let's take a little trip down a memory lovers (lover's) lane

Friday the joint is jumpin', teenyboppers (teenyboppers') favorite scene

I think we (we'd) better go inside, cause boy it sure is hot

Guys and gals, time to go, find the car and lets (let's) get in it
