I don't think I will look at an opal in the same light again. I doubt many people think of the way these stones are collected, how they were formed, the whole aspect of what it took before they are put around the neck of the lady. It's nice to know the miners are well looked after. They are beautiful stones. Diamonds are the same, we wear them, they are there in the jewelers, and we buy them, we just don't really appreciate there true worth. Your stories are always full of amazing details, and really worth their weight in opals! A wonderful read, the poem and the author notes. xsx :)

Wow! That is a fabulous image of a delightful opal. I love opals - they are so interesting. Beautiful stones, unfortunately a little bit too soft for everyday wear though.

I love opals, too! They are the most mysterious gemstone. I have 5 varying in size and yes the fire within a higher grade opal is a little like looking into a kalisescope. The faceted ones are unmatched in beauty. Such wonderful show offs! Nice writing style that takes the reader into a way of life that costs the workers an families perhaps more than can be measure in millimeters. Good word choice an is original. :0 GracieAnn

Enjoy I did. You tell the history of Australia with such ease for the reader that captivates us, at least me. I enjoy these "history" lessons about your country. Keep'm coming.

This looks great; it reminds me of my grandmother, whose birthstone was the opal, and I was looking at these a week ago. The only word I thought seemed like it was the wrong form was "opportune" as it seemed like it should be "opportunity." But I realize sometimes a rhyme scheme makes us limited.

What a wonderful story you have woven into this poem Kaye. The story of the fire opal, a favorite of mine too.

Reading each stanza gave me a greater understanding of the hardships these miners must endure to bring us the beautiful gems.

Thanks for enlightening me.

The opal (according to the chakra's) relates to the third eye (middle of forehead) don't know your birthstone - maybe the opal?
reply by Taffspride on 28-May-2013
Great info. I did not know that. My birthstone is turquoise not my favorite, there is another, but I cannot remember off had what it is. Opal is October I believe.

Thanks Kay, I wish is was the sapphire, my most favorite stone. My mother had been engaged to an Australian pilot during the war. He had a sapphire set surrounded by diamonds for her as an engagement ring. Sadly, he was shot down, and taken prisoner, reported dead. By the time he was healed and regained his memory, some years after the war had ended, she was already married to my father, and had had me.
Nevertheless, the sapphire is my most favorite of all stones.
