A worthy entry for the Memorial Day Memory contest Sharyn.

While most think of this as just a long holiday weekend. We do need to remember those who fought, and now are no longer with us.

Thanks for sharing. Good luck in the contest.

Again another excellent poem, well written and a great contest entry. The illustration is certainly one that enhances your wonderful words. Far too many graves of our young sons, husbands, dads, and brothers. Good luck in this contest, Sharyn, you are one very talented writer. xsx Sandra

That's for sure, Sandra - in this day and age, to fight wars is positively barbaric, hmm?

Such a touching tribute to all the brave members of our armed services, both men as well as women, who have fought and died so bravely to preserve the freedoms we enjoy in this beautiful country of ours.
A perfect Memorial Day treat for the eyes...and the soul.

I'm looking forward to the family cook out we have planned for Monday...much like you described, Sharyn. We think a lot about the fun and family time but sadly not near enough about the reason for the Holiday. Presented perfectly as always! I enjoyed much and wish you the best of luck in this contest!

far too many young men who'll never bounce a ball or see the sun again

Perfect ending! I love the parallel, using ball and sun two ways... really says it ALL. We celebrate and have fun on Memorial Day. Is that REALLY what the day is for, though? No!

Phyllis, you're one of the very few who really 'gets' everything that goes into my pieces - I so appreciate that. You really 'got' this one, and my birds one too. Praise from you is worth more than ten million fluffy fives!

Wow... humbling words. But, face it, Sharyn, your work is so eeeezy to praise, that I couldn't possibly do otherwise. You are a jewel here among the wannabes, truly. :)

Well you're my matching diamond Phyllis, that's for sure. You actually READ, and when you WRITE you REALLY write. We have a mutual admiration society going here, but that's fine, because it's absolutely a genuine two-way street. I just luvya!

Thanks...guess you're right. But when you read my new poem, you may lose all respect for me. LOL! It's lewd and crude and really not "me" at all ... (or is it?) :)

This IA a nice poem and I enjoyed reading it. But why do people stretch poems out like that. Good luck in the contest. God Bless!

we stretch it out because it's in "thought patterns" Carl ... and it's written to be performed or read aloud - so where you see a big space, you imagine a pause or thought, ok? Where the lines come close together, the thoughts are closely interrelated.

Thank you for explaining that to me.

stares memorial day straight in the eye and takes the flag waving rah rah war to task very effectively. the joy of the first stanza contrasted w/the rest - you made an anti-war poem that does not take the dignity from the day. yes, the flags are line up just so, but the graves are too many - such a waste that so many will never share in the jou of the first stanza, bouncing the ball or seeing the sun.

This is a sad and sobering poem regarding the young men who have lost their lives in war. It is very sad and you bring it home so clearly.
