Hey there Al
Back in January, I posted a story about my dog Butch. I fully understand your bond. This is a superb Share A Story In A Poem contest entry, and I am sure you'll do very well

Oh my friend, dogs are such faithful companions. I've had several dogs, never bought one always gave a home to homeless animals. Thanks to you and your father Leo had a caring family.

The story of Leo is beautifully written my dear friend, I smiled while I read it.

I wish you good luck in the contest

The writer uses the abab rhyme scheme effectively. The rhyming is good. This piece has a nice flow as the rhymes are not forced. This piece has nice harmony and a message that is clear.

I really enjoyed reading this one. I have a dog who has been comforting me ever since my accident-woman's best friend, LOL. A lovely story told with good rhyme and proximate rhyme.~Debbie

I love proximate rhymes myself.

Wow, this is a to the heart story/poem. That saying "A boy and his dog"...this is true but even more than that, he brought comfort and love and belief..

That is something you'll find in most dogs, their ability to love so freely and completely.. I've seen it to often, even when abused and battered, they want to love..

*sniffle*..... you made the mother in me want to hug and stroke the boys hair. Good thing I get to visit my son soon. I need to give my boy a hug.

Thanks for the exceptional review. Yes, I think Leo had some parental instincts. You are quite right about a dog's ability to love unconditionally. Thanks again. (I sent you a PM.)

A story resounding with the happiness of a boy and his dog. It is so true that animals take our problems off of ourselves and are there to console us. They are finding that a lot of Seniors are living longer if they have a pet to tend to.
Best wishes in the contest.

Yes, I have seen references to those studies. Dogs, I think, also, are more capable of unconditional love than are humans. Thanks for an excellent review and your good wishes.

Very nice story in a poem, Alvin. I'm glad you had Leo help you through the hard times, and what a lovely man your dad was to allow him to stay. Best wishes in the contest.

Hi Teach,
I found this to be a very good story in a poem and I wouldn't expect less coming from you. I found it to be a good read with a first person POV, down to the 1st line of the 8th stanza where I tripped over the introduction of a fourth character: "I saw how much the dog loved this young boy."
I don't know why you would use passed tense and not keep the POW on yourself, which you switched back to in the next line. Maybe it is a over sight since this entry has been modified from the initial posting. This is the only thing I see that would stand in the way of your winning. Your friend, Bob

I tired of referring to myself in the first person, so I referred to myself in the third person. We're both old enough to remember Jimmy Carter used that literary device in his speeches, but I think I shall re-think it, because you aren't the first person to mention it. Thanks for an excellent review.

This endearing narrative poem pairs a dog and boy, a winning combination.

I saw how much the dog loved this young boy,
(In this line, are 'I' and 'this young boy' the same person? At first I thought the narrator was giving the dog to another boy that the dog loved.)

Parents were pretty strict about dog naming. I'd let my son name a dog anything as long as it wasn't disgusting. LOL

Very enjoyable read.

Cheers,
DW

Yes, I am going to have to change that line. I meant to refer to myself in the third person, but it fell flat. I'll go work on it. My parents took their faith very seriously and I think they though it would be rather sacrilegious to name a dog "Christian." Thanks for an excellent review.
