This very well written piece moved me to tears. It tells the story of those who rarely tell it themselves. The story of injuries that nobody can see, but are just as painful than any physical injury - maybe even more unbearable. What you have written needs to be heard by the powers that be within the military, and also our politicians. So much more needs to be done to help these wounded souls who will never be the same because of the horrors they have experienced and seen.

My husband is in the military (Navy) so I was especially interested to read it. Although he has not seen active combat, I have an affinity to military personnel, and their families, as theirs is a tough life. Made so much tougher if they have to go to war.

Well done with this. Expertly written, and telling a message that needs to be heard.

I thank you so much for sharing with me your thoughts on this subject. I so agree with you that the military and the politicians need to do a reality check when it comes to the care of our injured soldiers. War is hell and it is a living hell for those who experience it. They deserve everything we can possibly give them for all they have done and continue to do for us.

Thank you for your generous rating, but most of all your very articulate and on point words.

I'm very proud of you for writing this. It needed to be written. My husband is former military and still suffers a bit with nightmares from his experience as a medic. I know that when we were first in the military counseling was out of the question as well. It was perceived as weakness and many believed a cause for demotions..at any rate, well done!

So glad that the piece struck a chord with you. I can't even imagine what your husband experienced as a medic.

The military is so damn slow to make changes, but it is high time they did. These kids give everything and they deserve every bit of care and treatment available to assist them in returning to civilian life.

Again, thank you for this wonderful and heartfelt review.

Very well written and needs to be heard over and over. My cousin came back from teh Gulf War with traumatic stress diorder, or whatever it was called then. He's okay now, but for about ten years he was a mess... took a new wife and child to turn his mind away from the horrors.

Phyllis, thank you so much for this review and for sharing one of the many stories that comes from these wartime experiences. I am happy your cousin was a success story and sorry that he had to struggle so long before his life turned around.

Thank you again for this great review.

You have written an important and absolutely truthful commentary on our young soldiers who have served our country, nd have duffered deeply. I know you did your homework on this as you have quoted facts which enhance what you have written. This is an excellent piece of work, and it is my hope that many readd this and understand how it is with our young men.
God bless your son, Joan

Agreed, Marisa. The down side is that when we come back, if we show any weakness, our career is over. That's why there are so many living with this internally. It's a shame, but the brass is not willing to accept weakness.

Yes, I know this is a serious problem with the military brass. My son has said it is a real obstacle for those who need to seek help, but feel they can't because, as you say, it will derail their careers.

It is high time for this culture to change. Too many are suffering because of outmoded ways of thinking.

Thank you for your review and comments, I so appreciate them.

Marisa,

Your essay on our soldiers is heart warming, and it sends chills up my spine when I consider what the soldiers are going through in the Middle East. Like the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan, our leaders are sending our boys and girls into battles that cannot be won. The last war victory for the United States was WWII.

As a veteran from the Vietnam era, I lost friends to both physical wounds and mental ones. I honor our fighting men and women and support them. It is the politicians in DC that have lost my respect.

Marisa, I could rant on for hours, but that would not accomplish anything. Bless your heart for writing such a mind opening story.

Curtis

    Marisa,

I don't want to leave the wrong impression...I served during the Viet Nam era, but I did not go to Viet Nam.

This is a very well written essay about the plight of our young soldiers. Your skillful writing has evoked a great deal of thought which is so relevant and important. This is a matter for the policy makers and politicians.
Sadly we have all seen or experienced the effects suffered by these young ones. Only the emotionally strong people will survive. Sadly for others it is a life of living hell.
Thank you for sharing.

this is a very revealing look at the harsh realities, brought on by war. the brave soldiers that fight them and the permanent worry that their loved ones endure, and how, should they survive physically, the mental scars of all that each individual has to endure, quite often with little support from the government of the country that they represented. of little consolation to them, is that at least if a soldier suffers shock on the battlefield, he is no longer shot for cowardice, like in the first world war.

i read and write and watch alot about war and your comments are totally true and real, and it's a shame that the persons in power don't seem to have the inclination or the nous, to honour our brave troops nor care about what happens to the survivors after they return

This is an amazing piece. What I love most about it is that you seem to grab the reader by the hand to you guide us through the points that you want to make; your piece is really unlike some that seem to be a bullet-point list made pretty with a few more words. I also really enjoy the overall format of it. This is because you shower the reader with huge pieces of powerful information that overall is extremely hard to handle; but to fact that each paragraph is only a few lines long gives us the time to breathe and to not be overwhelmed by so much at once. Another skillful addition of yours was the subtle use of quotes. Sometimes writers "drop a quote bomb", and then it makes the piece very heavy and hard to follow; whereas not only did you perfectly blend in the actual quotes within the text; but you also chose your quotes very well. They match what you want to say in a seamless way, and they really tie your essay together. Excellent job, and keep on writing!

PTSD is one more tragedy of war. I don't think there is any way to prepare someone for the horror they see. And sadly, too many suicides are in the future of these soldiers. This is a very well written and concise essay on the subject. The additional quotes inserted add strength to this piece.

You do use the word - that - a few times here when the word - who - should have been used. While it may now be acceptable to use that, the proper usage would be to use the word who when speaking of people.

Example: it is always the youth of those countries involved that are called upon to fight the wars. --> it is always the youth of those countries involved who are called upon to fight the wars.
