Dear Dallas I can't tolerate (sorry) kids that won't behave either. You give great examples foe why you don't like the word. This is a well written essay. The word I would love to throw away "FITS." I know people don't mean anything but it it but since I have seizures, people will ask, "Shirley when did you have your last fit?" I want to say "Well I can have one in two seconds if you don't quit calling my seizures a fit!" LOL Thanks for sharing your work with us, Shirley the 'Fit" thrower' :)

Bravo! This is very verrrry good! I agree with what you say here. It's not a good word to use, for it means you've given up. You don't think you deserve any better. And it won't GET better as long as you tolerate it.

Thank you. Don't have many pet peeves but that one is right at top. Next to people who don't use their turn signals. lol

You've done so much more than simply consign a word to lexicography's trash can. You've aired (and shown great wisdom about) your unhappy marriage, and all done with a breezy, attractive prose style which is a joy to read.

Love this! I was afraid it would turn into a dem/repub battle, but you took us down a twisted curve and offered a fine life lesson as well! I so wish i could give this to more than a few people who could benefit from it! Great write, thanks for sharing.

Tolerate is sure a wild goose that can turn back on you. Well, I share your view totally and agree that patiece will serve a better dose for the word.

Thanks for reviewing. It's an ugly, non-constructive, and often insulting word. JUst one of those odd things that gets under my skin. Glad I don't have too many or I would need an attitude adjustment.

This is an essay where use of illustrative examples is key - you use excellent examples to demonstrate exactly why you dislike the word "tolerate" so much. This essay demonstrates so well how concrete examples beat out abstractions every time. Brooke

This is a very thoughtful piece of writing, and I appreciate you sharing a bit of your personal back story as it adds a nice layer of understanding to your feeling for the word in question.

It's a valid point about other words being just as much, if not more effective, in place of it, as well. The point about children should open a few eyes at least.

A nice write and an enjoyable read.
