I'm so glad I read this. I too have rolled my eyes at the word tolerate. I've always thought it had a condescending air of superiority about it. This was great I enjoyed it

This whole piece resounds YES. I, too, tolerated spousal abuse. Mostly psychological over physical. Bandaids fix up the latter but still nurse the former from time to time. Your descriptions for the parents saving for bail money is priceless and sooooo true. Great work.

Dear Dallas Alice,
I forget what a really fine prose writer you are. this one definitely merits the six they won't let me give you. Your writing is always thoughtful, honest and heartfelt. I liked the creative you approached this by using the word "tolerate" and made a strong point. Really fine writing--Ted

In my dictionary, the word tolerate is a rusty old lock that can only be pried open with more constructive words; ones that seek a solution. In some cases patience may apply. Or in others like mine, simply remove it.

That's a good suggestion you make there Dallas and I'm with you. LOL to many times I've heard the word and never the less had to do it.

this was a truly thought provoking work. I can see where you are coming from with this. I can think of many words that should never have found their way into the English language. Many with just four letters.

Well written with a positive feeling throughout

I want to comment on the most important thing first. It is not easy to liberate oneself from an abusing spouse. I congratulate you for ending your 'tolerance' of the man and the situation.

You wrote a nice piece about a pet peeve. You grabbed my attention immediately and kept it all the way through. We all learned early on in college lit classes that if a theory can be supported with logical evidence then the theory must be considered viable and cannot be dismissed. You did exactly this with the word tolerate. You offered your theory and presented solid, logical evidence in support of that theory; therefore, it must be taken seriously. Nice job.

There were a few problematic areas. You wrote, ". . . it continued as long as I tolerated it: it was easier to put . . . ." The colon should be a semi-colon because you are joining two independent clauses of a compound sentence. The first sentence of the next paragraph also has an incorrect use of a colon. You wrote, "There are some situations where I think the word patience or impatience would be better served: In [in] the office for instance, If [if] I am . . . ." A colon is used to introduce a list but this sentence only has one item (in the office). You started the sentence out saying 'some situations,' which does indicate a list is coming, but only one situation was given - the office.

Overall, you did a nice job.

Dallas, you make some really excellent points in this fine essay. Tolerance, to my mind, is quite often an excuse for not wanting to be bothered. I loved the suggestion that parents who tolerate too much had better start a fund for future bail money. And your final two lines are eloquent and wise. Great write, my friend. Hugs, Bev

Hi Alice, a well penned essay and you had me pondering that word "tolerate" for some time after the last line.
Over morning coffee I tend to be leaning your way.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hello Dallas01. Interesting idea to rid ourselves of the word, "Tolerate"..hmm..Indeed, "to put up with." To me, the word tolerate does sound a bit totalitarian and harsh. You did good to include the definitions of the word. It would be neat to come up with a new word since language is afterall always evolving. Clearly, you wrote a good piece. good work and cheers.
