Cogitator, I like your name and its relation to the Rodin's "The Thinker" that you use as illustration. Very interesting to read about your early life in France. Your mother seemed much more aware of any restructuring needed and I'm glad your father could finally agree. I've heard of the cat o-nine tails. My mother used a willow tree branch, very evil things. Glad you got rid of the weapon. I take it the belt was an improvement.
Suggestion, change whichever to whomever..paragraph 7. ...a last resort for a lot of different characters, many of whom do not care to discuss their past." Suggest because who is for people. I even use it for animals Changeisgood

I am busily occupied to continue this journey. I hope you follow. You should be aware that this all leads to self-discovery and will challenge all indoctrination, domestication and propaganda. Thanks, John...

I found this a fascinating read - your narrative was excellent and you captured my interest from the start right through to the conclusion. Where you left off leads well into the next chapter too. So much so, I plan to 'fan' you so I don't miss it. :) Excellent!

You open a window onto a fascinating (and beautiful) world. It's a delightful story and you tell it well. I'm looking forward to the Chicago chapter!

Delightful read; very interesting to read about your family's history. Makes me want to do more research into my own family's history, where exactly people were born and what they did. I thoroughly enjoyed your descriptions of life on the farm and all the work that went into it, where a "coal-burning stove dominated the living/kitchen area" and your mother had to trudge through knee-deep snow for hours while evading detection by the Germans.

Sounds like you were quite a character, "accustomed to my cheeks and ears being squeezed and pulled, the small hairs on my temples being twisted and was even clapped occasionally." The part about throwing the cat-o-nine-tails into the outhouse was especially funny.

It's too bad we have so much instant entertainment these days. I wish my children had to make their own fun; instead it's mostly done for them.

I wish you the best with this creative piece, hoping that the next chapter has a little dialogue, because I'd like to read that too.

I am so speechless right now because of your story. It contains such vivid imagery and I could feel as if I was in the story. This is truly a great work.

From what I have surmised here with part of this article. That your parents had a very difficult life. Anyone that could survive the Nazis and WW2 had to be courageous to say the least. This was another excellent article that spans a period of your life and living. Keep on writing and I'll continue to read... John

Nicely written story.
the only thing I would suggest to reword is "He had visited his Chicago family in 1951 and " - you are saying this exact thing few paragraphs above this and it reads a bit strange then.
Beside this little thing, I found your story very well written, very interesting, it reads very fluently and smoothly. I liked the introspections. Very good job!

It's always interesting to read about other people's life stories:-) This is a well written piece and I must say the memory at the start is quite a horrifying for a kid:-)

We can always draw upon our own experiences through life as a learning instrument, as their is nothing more satisfying or influential than a personal experience. You have certainly accomplished that within this great start to a promising book. Being a writer of my own published autobiography, I enjoyed your story and look forward to its continuation.
