This is a beautifully written piece of work. I love the opening lines. The body of the work is humourous and at the same time treats a serious issue. Fantastic ending. kudos

I beg upon my dimpled knees ... priceless! How often I've wondered at the chubbies in the mall with a huge bag of fries and a diet coke ... justification is such an amazing sedative for the awareness!

A wonderful, convincing write - good work!

Hi Marisa, once again your writing doesn't disappoint or fail to bring a big 'cheesy' grin to my face. i'm not one for resolutions or dates that tell you when you should start being healthier. You are a character and your sense of humor could rival mine in the dry stakes. You give the best advise in doing anything slowly involving diets, but that is the problem right there. Diets should be banned and healthier food choices with a plan brought in, diets are unsustainable life choices are not, take care and don't kill yourself trying to gain some fitness. I totally enjoyed the entirety of the content of your story, thank you. Kindest wishes James xx

    Hi! James

Happy New Year to you. I agree diets are a problem, so I don't do them. I call what I do a lifestyle change, something I can live with for life.

As for my 'Rocky' challenge, I am quite enjoying it. A change up is good for the system; gets things going again.

So glad you enjoyed this zany story of mine.

I'm sure its just me but It reads like poetry in some spots..

am an urban animal. The city is my home turf. The sounds of the cars on the expressways, police and ambulance sirens blaring, and the commuter trains whizzing past are familiar and comforting music to my ears. The landscape is dank and sparse at this time of year and one's breath is visible as it clings to the moisture ladened air. Now if I could only find a 'Paulie' with a meat locker my workout program would be complete. A good kickass punching session on a side of beef would be just the ticket

That's probably because you have a poetic ear.

I'm happy you enjoyed this piece.

Marisa, once again you delight with this absolutely perfect humorous write - I bellowed with laughter at the legless torsos and racing around a dog track after fried chicken and three-layer chocolate cake. The rest of the time I managed to stifle my loud laughter to a moderate level (when the neighbors threatened me with a noise complaint). Simply wonderful! Wish I still had a six for this one.

What a great essay.

You mixed personal non-resolutions, flared out to add commentary that mirrors so many delussions people feed themselves and the sharp perspective of 300 calories burned vs the exerciser's 3000 treat.

The poem at the end was funny and adds a nice romp to the post.

I'm like you: I resolved many years ago to stop making resolutions that I would simply and consistently never stick to past the end of January. Your approach of eating right, exercising regularly, and simply being good to yourself makes so much more sense all round.

You have a very pleasant, easy to follow writing style that would appeal to many. It's the sort of piece that would make a great magazine column. My only, small and insignificant, quibble would be the length of some of the paragraphs (especially the "Take the women that decide after every workout..." one). Maybe find a couple of suitable break points in them.

Other than that, very enjoyable piece of writing. Thank you.

What a delightul little fireside good sense chat Marisa - and I must ruefully admit to having thoughts of signing up with a personal trainer ... but now I've read this, no need to, right? Love your sharing the final verses with us. VERY well crafted piece! :)Sharyn

This is hilarious, but you've got some pearls of wisdom in this piece. New Year resolutions don't work for me, because there's something macabre in my psyche that makes me want to do the opposite of what I write. If I write I want to lose 10 pounds, you can bet before the year's over, I've gained 10 pounds. I love your poem, especially these stanzas.

"I beg upon my dimpled knees,
Deliver me from jujube's.
And when my days of trial are done,
And my war with malted milk balls won,

Let me stand with Heavenly throng,
In a shining robe - size 30 long.
I can do it Lord, if you'll show to me,
The virtues of lettuce and celery.

Teach me the evil of mayonnaise,
And of pasta a la Milanese.
And crisp-fried chicken from the South,
Lord, if you love me, shut my mouth!"

You are too funny. Have a great year!

I'm extremely happy that you enjoyed this piece.

I too have found that if I make resolutions in the New Year, I will certainly set out to break them before the ink is dry on the page. I freed myself from this ritual years ago.
