Well, I'm pretty sure some of us would run through the streets naked, for all kinds of reasons. LOL But you do a great job talking about this subject and revealing yourself in the process.

Great job.

Thanks Edward ... and I hope those inclined to run naked at least do so in the summer months! LOL

Great non-fiction! I thought the author's comment about writing itself as morphine for the soul was eccentric and a creative view. I really enjoyed reading this essay - it was different and made me look outside the box.
Thank you, harmony13

You know, have to hand it too you for saying all of this girl. It's one thing to write but to feel as you do Marisa is a talent.

A great piece here. Yes, I think it is true that we expose our souls and rightly so. I think as a writier it important to express every emotion even if it hurts. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.

I completely agree with you -- words are the best gift we can receive! Have you ever heard of synesthesia? Words just taste good to me.

Your "naked in the streets" metaphor is so appropriate - writing is like showing every part of yourself, like giving up your own child to be reviewed and criticized by the masses. I also agree with your morphine metaphor. To me, writing is a salve when I feel bad, and my writing is usually better when I feel rough. Your "connecting flight" image is beautiful and clever! As for your admission of characters in your head without a storyline, perhaps you might be interested in reading a play. I can't remember the name of the piece, but it is basically a group of characters sitting on stage waiting for an author to come and write a story for them! So I guess my suggestion would be for you to write out your characters, maybe start having conversations with them or between them - could be they'll write their own story!

I have to admit, while I have heard of synesthesia, I know nothing about this neurological condition.

As for character development, I really don't feel inclined to write fiction, that is probably why none have appeared and suggest a story to me.

Glad you seemed to enjoy the piece. Thank you so much for your review and comments, I greatly appreciate both.

"My compelling need to write springs from an overflow of thoughts much like that of a reservoir filled to capacity and needing to find an outlet. If I do not allow these thoughts out through the written word then they continue to haunt me until I do. Like a Dickens' ghost they are relentless in their pursuit of freedom."

And there you describe my need to write. If there is one drop too many in the ocean of thoughts swirling in my mind, brain, soul, I cannot rest until I allow them to see the light of day, even if no one but me reads them. Obviously, I keep a journal, but sometimes I do let others peek.

I have great respect for fiction writers, but I find my feet more tethered to reality. Usually!

Great piece! Metaphoric Morphine.

I too am tethered to reality, but with the same sense of urgency to release my thoughts as those who are compelled to do the biding of their fictional characters and create stories for them.

Thank you for your most thoughtful review and your generous rating. I love that the piece spoke to you as a writer.

We can completely empathize with one another's addiction to this relentless need to write.

What I like about this essay is that it has the temperment of a person looking in the mirror, and noting the colour of her own hair and eyes. It is the voice of inner thoughts, not the lure at the end of a fishing line, of someone trolling for acceptance or accolades.

I like the inclussion of the quotes. In essay writing, similarly minded people who share the writers perspective add credence and strength to the POV. you are not offering up an outrageous and maverick opinion. In fact, many superb writers shared your views. By sharing your essay with their words you help the reader identify with your feelings about the craft of writing.

I wonder though, whether Churchill actually wrote that speech himself? I remember distinctly being shocked that Kennedy's very famous moments were scripted by speech writers, and I suppose, so are Obama's. All three men were great orators, and no doubt would never have delivered a speech if they did not fully embrace the words. They go down in history with quotes that surround their leadership that might well have been written by a mousy librarian making a little extra cash by writing, string together words that resonated in our hearts for decades. I suppose we'll never know.

While Kennedy, Churchill and Obama did and do have a staff of speech writers the final draft always fell and falls to them. These are men who, as you stated, are great orators and no matter who composed the speeches the eloquence of the delivery is everything. Actual speech giving life and meaning to the words.

From what I have read, Kennedy had a good deal of input where his speeches were concerned. Great political figures, for the most part, are extremely good wordsmiths, since words are the coin of the realm for them.

Thank you for this truly honest and third person account of my work. I can see by this cohesive review that I am in the presence of a gifted writer.

A very well written piece. Love how you interwove the quotations throughout. Indeed writing is like morphine for the soul. ( Words are powerful and to be able to harness them even for a brief moment, so as to convey one's thoughts to others in a way that might move them or even change their lives, is an astonishing act.) They are indeed powerful as can be seen what they have motivated men to do throughout history.

This is a really inspirational essay. It's very elegantly presented and you present a marvelous account of what drives people to write. "Morphine for the soul" is an excellent way to describe the compulsion to write. There is that pleasure-pain connection, as you state. I like the way you describe the thoughts that are there inside, waiting like ghosts until they are released. The reader and the writer making that special connection is great moment, and you include that from both the writer's and reader's side. You also have incorporated some excellent quotations that fit perfectly into your essay. Six star Excellence. judiverse

Words fail me when it comes to expressing my deepest gratitude to you for this lovely and so very thoughtful review.

The generous rating is greatly appreciated, but I most value the 'words' used to convey your feelings about this piece.
