Miss Merri, I see why you won this contest. This is a beautiful poem. You use images that express the meaning so well. It is a classic ode to sorrow and I especially like the reference to god. Also, the hope expressed at the end :"together we will sing" -is such a beautiful thought. Congratulations!

Beautiful prayer/poem so well crafted that only its aching honesty surpasses its skilful creation.
I lied this best: I ask the One who saw his own son die
and surely knows the pain of sorrow well,
to wrap my friend in comfort, much the way
a father holds a child whose loss he shares,
reminding him that darkest clouds hold light...
the promise of refreshing rains to come.
Excellent job.

This poem has strong images and emotions. It is a well written prayerful ode to help your friend from darkness of grief to the light of acceptance and remembered happy times. The return of music is a strong metaphor for the return to a life of joy and love with the lost person forever in you heart.

Your iambic meter is steady and makes for excellent flow, and your use of enjambment enhances that flow.
Strong expression of soulful emotion is most compelling.
effective simile of grief that hovers like clouds before a storm
good alliteration in heart is heavy
and in refreshing rain
My only criticism is that die and sky are a perfect rhyme, which is not kosher in blank verse.
