I am so glad I had a six left to give this. It was a beautifully written, enchanting story, and one that will bring a few tears. I did exactly the same thing for my daughter using two cardboard cut-outs of tiny feet with cocktail sticks inserted to guide them so I could have the footprints coming from the window ledge. Her amazement and delight the next morning, is one of the most memorable images of her childhood I have in my head.
You have captured it all so well. Thank you so much for reminding me.

I don't know what to say except you've captured the exquisite spirits of a seven year old, which brings a light to anyone around them, the grandfather waiting to rejoin his Nell, and the magic of not only their relationship, but the grandfather's abiding love for his wife. I had to stop highlighting because I was so entranced by the story. It was simply magnificent.
For some, the dirty little secret was too private, it could not be shared. For others the secret was something that freed their spirits and liberated their souls.===ahhhhhh...how sweet!
Her Big Secret - like her first tooth - was out.===huge deal..a rite of passage..:)
What happened? Should I call the police?"===great response!
Her" Fairyland was a deeply shaded, distant corner of their large Australian garden full of giant eucalypts and scented yellow puff-balls of wattle. This particular corner, though, was home to an old, twisted and rather brittle Poinciana ===what a beautiful description...

I really like your story, and not just I'm a grandfather too. Your dialogue was engaging and realistic, and the picture you drew of the grandfather and his granddaughter were perfect. Some of your descriptions were a bit long. For example in a dialogue about 1/6th of the way into the story you wrote: "She interrupted him, jiggling up and down with excitement and still bubbling with laughter." which could easily been shortened to: She jiggled up and down with laughter. Some of your descriptions are excellent. For example you wrote:"at the beginning of her ooh-I-can't-wait life ahead, her laughter like silver bells to the old man's ears. --" Ahh, the poem crafter in you was coming out. Some of your images fell flat. For example you wrote: "He stored it in his memory, like one of those new-fangled cameras he'd seen." A photo graphic memory doesn't seem to fit for an old man here, especially when comparing it to digital stored images. Over all, however, this was an excellent story.

I miss our two
eldest grand-daughters - 18 & 22 - both in Florida - the
eldest just finished her 4 yrs at FIU Athletics for golf, the youngest, just started the 4 yrs - but they'll be home for Christmas.
The other three are younger and we see them all regularly.
