I am disabled and rarely get out to enjoy the out of doors, something I truly miss Enjoy them while you can. Winters are difficult for those with poor balance and in wheelchairs. We had almost no snow last year and I did miss it~Debbie

I read writings such as your about growing older. As a middle-ager, I begin to get a hint. Some things become more challenging. But I hope I never forget that "real" age is in my mind. (I've known folks who were "old" in their 50s, and I know some you are "youngsters" in their 80s. Thanks.

I want to be like my grandfather was, the neighbors saw him get pinned down by the teenagers throwing snowballs at him, and were amazed at just how quickly they got nailed by him, and not with snowballs.

It's all how you look at things. I thank you very much for taking the time to read the poem, review it as well the compliments. Mike

I like how you've delineated the seasons into their own positives and negatives. There's something to love and accept in each season, but we cherish them all just being alive. Good rhyming and movement.

It's strange for a summer poem, but I felt if I didn't bring winter up, it would appear I was complaining about summer and not that people have problems with both seasons. I guess I got the people that have difficulties with winter on board.

I also wanted to highlight what should always be good about summer. I thank you very much for the compliments and this review. Mike

Hi, Mike. I enjoyed your poem about growing older, and I understand it completely (I am 81). I hope you won't mind if I, as a former English teacher, ask for a small correction. Line 9 reads as if the kids are looking out the window. ("Looking out the windo3w, kids...") You could say "I see outside the window, kids play..." Other than that, your lines tell a true story about aging. Nicely done.
Sally

I thank you for the suggested correction, but I am happy with that line as I like the gruffness about it, sort of a bit more of separation then should be. I enjoy this review and for sharing and the compliments too. Mike

I love your spirit of writing a poem about summer even if you are not feeling quite up to doing it. You certainly did a great job of it and I like the poignant tone of one who considers youth, middle age and old age in relation to the seasons. The lines below are very lovely:

Looking out of the window, kids play a million ways,
reminds one just how little it takes to enjoy the day

As the poem goes along, flowing smoothly and with a great choice of words and thoughts, the positive spin comes on:

Comfort and effort become less a concern,
as you find reasons to come out and renew your spirit,
with another wonderful season to discern

There is always the bright side - even with health issues and the inevitability of aging - and your poem brings us to understand and look at the bright side.

Thank you for sharing this thought provoking work.

It seems I am a juicy steak for every spider, ant or misquito in the neighborhood now. Maybe because my skin is paper thin now. I hate winter more. I would rather sweat then freeze. I just tollerate the seasons anymore, happy to see another,I think spring and fall are now my pick and they are almost non-existant where I live. LOL Honeycomb

So true! I felt this with my grandmother. She dies in 2010 at the age of 81. The climate used to affect her more. She could not bear the heat and used to shiver in AC too. But your moving poem has a better message to convey.
A very moving one, really!

Thank you for the compliments and the review. Also for sharing about your grandmother too. To live to that age, you have to be tough. There are aspects I like about India, and had I the resources, I would definitely visit, but I do fear the heat.

I had a photography teacher couple visit and get a splendid photograph of the Taj Mahal, but the heat and the food really made him suffer. His wife told the story, of him brushing his teeth and exclaiming, "Even the toothpaste is hot here!" Personally, I enjoy the food and occasionally get some. Mike

It is hot, really. Where I live, the summers normally have 45 degree centigrade, at times 49 degrees too. Our AC stops working at times:)We dont see snow EVER, unless we visit the Northern India and Himalayas. I have been to Taj dozens of time as my father was brought up in that city. It is mesmerizing! Take care and do visit this simple, mismanaged, corrupted, colorful and spiritual nation some day!I love it.

Love to. Maryland is easy to find as it is on the east coast of the US and the Chesepeake Bay is the easiest way. I try not to point out Washington, DC too much.

We have a good split of the seasons, but this summer was horrible hot or horrible wet. This weekend it wasn't overly hot, but I wondered if the humidity wasn't made of sugar water, everything just sticked. And we've been getting some pretty good storms.

The thing is, be it winter or summer, it can hit extremes in temp or weather, but usually this is fleeting. If you don't like it one year, just wait to the next. Spring and fall are enjoyable usually, but too fleeting as summer and winter want to battle over the other.

Something I would like to see around here is more spirituality! The political climate is a bit crazy, because if you are against any thing the democrats want, no matter how small, expect to be harrassed, ridiculed, called names, and bullied. I had my life threatened by a grown, obese man stuffed in a little girls, pink plastic toy car. What can I say! LOL

reply by rashi kumar on 04-Sep-2012
So good to know this except that pink car man:)

In spite of all the differences, human beings are the same everywhere. Love, family, God, mistakes and lessons! Great talking to you!

I really enjoyed your pem. I understand I very well. As my health fails me
( I'm not that old ) the treats of the seasons elude me more And more.
Am I throwing the towel in. HELL no ! My interests may need some tweaking but I still love life.

Hello MikeK2,

Your poem gracefully describes the seasons of life that dance so eloquently over a lifespan and through the never-ending winter, spring, summer and fall.

I especially liked:
Steamed crabs and barbecues, smells can't fail to imbibe
(Good imagery ~ one of the tasty smells of summer)

Keep the cool blue waters flowing ~ Autumn is near.

Regards, LateBloomer

Very nice free style poem about summer. Your work flows freely, and the ideas are especially meaningful to me as I am now one of those elderly who hasn't yet quite reconciled the fact that though there is still a child inside me that yearns to run, play, and frolic in the sun . . . my body won't do much of what I used to do because of stiffness, replaced joints, etc. I don't like the heat and humidity either . . . didn't as a child, but my joy as a child was to go barefoot . . . something I can't do outside now because even the grass hurts my feet.

It's one of those things you just have to tolerate and work though. I enjoyed reading this review and thank you for it. Mike
