I was thinking about sitting by a camp fire cross-legged to hear your many stories of nature and life. Your enriched feeling burns like fire water in my spirit as I ask for more.

i love the ending line: "The Deep South has a face of lost times but remains the center for which my memories rest."
everyone comes from a place that is sacred but doesn't have the same meaning as to native americans?

thank you for sharing!

I can smell the magnolia's as I read this piece and picture the Spanish moss hanging form the oak trees that line the road. The humidity has me wiping my brow as I reach for a glass of sweet tea.

Thanks for sharing this memory with me.

I actually had one of the best steaks I have ever had at a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Alabama. They served home-made bread with strawberry butter. Somethings you just can't get anywhere else

Do you remember where you got the strawberry butter.. You are right there are just some things that you cannot get everywhere..

I don't remember the name of the place, but i will never forget the food.

What a lovely poem of the Deep South. I too have grown up in the panhandle of Florida, which is on the border of Alabama. This poem brings many memories for me of days gone by. This is written with a forlorn, melancholy feel.

Your well-written prose-poem tells the truth about the deep South. As a Mississippian I can say "Ahh!" to the
descriptions of the beautiful elements and "Oh, me" to the stanza about slavery! Good job

I often write about the South. I am located iFlorida within hills, forests and pastureland. I know of sweet tea and how one does not "sit" but rather "sets themselves awhile.
The streets are brick and many of the homes have galleries. At night you can smell the orange blossoms as well as magnolias on the breeze.

Well you know what I am writing about here. I love those times that you smell those sweet smells of the southern air. I love sweet tea and fried chicken! I have some really profound memories of growing up in Alabama. I love Florida too. I was just there last month for a week. I was in Seaside Florida. Thank you for the great review! Happi

This is a good poem and does speak of a place changed over time, a place with memories for you. Well written. Is there a reason why the lines are so long, as if two lines have bee joined together? It makes this a bit harder to read.

A great work of your youthful memories and current conditions. I think this sounds like the memories we all hold of our old hometowns only to find changes upon return.Excellent. NOthing to change or crit.
