Your descriptions are disturbingly realistic. So sad that so many of us will end like this. An excellent poem on a heartbreaking subject. :] Nancy

Thx so much Nancy - it's something we don't want to contemplate too heavily I think - living for today is the best gift we can give ourselves! thx so much for reading & reviewing!

The poem tears at the reader, tormenting them with visions they would wish, if at all possible to avoid.
A superb piece of free-verse which flows from image to image so fluently as it depicts the sequence of events and the growing chaos within her mind.
All of the imagery is effective in a "terrible" way, I particularly liked "black bats" - dark, uncontrollable thoughts, "fermented seed" - growing in an unhealthy and cloying way, and "crazed red pearls" - bringing the poem full circle and linking the mental and physical stresses brought about by the onset of what is truly a "madness".
Good luck in the contest this a very worthy entry.

Thx for being open to such a read Holly - and for "getting" all the metaphors, and for the "shape" of the piece. Bless you!

I wonder where the unending flow swells from. Once a poet always a poet. I love this wonderful piece with its beauty and richness is images and poetic lines.

It's not easy getting old, but if we, as mothers have done our jobs, we can rest assured that our children, especially our daughters will do OK. I think this makes a good contest entry. Best of luck. PP

Incredible imagery here, and there is me with not a six to my name. You have put so much thought into this exploration of the ravages of dementia. Well done

aah there you are - "hi" emsey - yep, I've run out of sixes too! glad you dropped by - this site seems to encourage more poetry and short prose pieces, so I'm welcoming the chance to explore those things too - I was pleased with this piece, as it's been brewing in my head for some time ... also wrote a script on it this week - good to empty that stuff OUT of my head! How have you been?? Best wishes, Sharyn

    Well, thankyou, and you?

Actually I'm having a GREAT time, with lots of time to focus on writing as my husband and son are away for two more luxurious weeks! And, you'll be pleased to hear, my mother has made rather a spectacular recovery!

That's AMAZING, so pleased about your Mum, but she gave you great muse!!!!

She did indeed - she always was a drama queen - turns out that yes, she's getting older (I can hear her groping for words) but the "dementia" was brought on my shock from a nose bleed/haemorrhage - she's actually back at HOME do you believe! living by herself and back to making everyone's lives hell again! in her element!
reply by Scarbrems on 30-Jun-2012
Well, at least it's a relief that she's better. You wouldn't have her any other way

Tough diagnosis for those initially afflicted. It lessens for them as it strengthens for the loved ones. I've been where you are.

Thx Artemis - it is so hard to see this - you're absolutely right - and SO many, many people go through this - one of my friends ruefully called it "almost a rite of passage". One can only hope that it is not a rite we all have to go through!
    Best wishes, Sharyn

'Red Pearls' is an extremely well-written and heart-wrenching piece. Those who have known someone with Dementia will have very little trouble relating to this. It was a privilege to read and review this talented poet's work.

I guess i knew it from the start. Dementia steals our loved one from us to the oint where they forget who we are. They feel isolated. They fight to come back. But never do. This is well written. Brings back alot of memories of my mom. God bless.

Thank you my dear - no, it's rather awful, isn't it? Growing old is not an easy thing to do with grace.

Lovely poem. Very nice thoughts and nicely done. I recall my old mom with :
gold fillings gleaming
scheming to bite,
gashing her once lovely mouth
this ... creature.

growing old is not so cheerful unless we have children like you who thought so deeply.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

a very sad but explicitly powerful write, Sharyn,
that captures the trauma of dementia exceptionally.
my thoughts are with you both and, ironically,
good luck for the contest!
warmly, xx, eph.
