Hi Brooke! Fixed! Thank you! I need to organize the whole mess of them too. Over the years they've/the pix have gotten mixed up. Like me! Thanks again! :) Susan

Susan, sometimes I love memories. Some days.... a photograph can bring a well buried pain hurtling right to the surface.
Your piece has a wonderful mix of love, sadness, affection, fresh rips in old wound scabs, puzzlement.... you've managed to touch a lot of bases and probably make a few people squirm a little with their own memories (me).

We all look longingly at memories, wether stimulated by images or thoughts. this was a lovely, introspective write that seemed like it wasntthat easy to write. Very thoughtful and thought provoking--Ted

We just never know do we? The truth in your story is felt. So many of us have sat alone, thumbing through old photos and thinking of why we weren't the one with the 'real smile? Thank you for sharing.

Hey there! How are you!?? I love my photos, but boy they do get me down sometimes...I have so many I couldn't save them if a fire broke out. Not good! Insurance doesn't help with the things we cannot replace. Thank you for a most welcome review. xoxo. Susan

Hi Susan,

You have penned a sad but evocative story for the non-fiction contest. My heart went out to you more than once as I read your words. I am so sorry for the sadness you felt while looking at your old pictures. Each one holds a memory that is sometimes good and sometimes way too sad to remember. You have such good writing skills and I think your entry will be hard to beat. Well done and good luck in the contest....blessings, chey

This is a very poignant piece and who of us hasn't reflected on some of these things. The descriptions of each photo and the stories they tell is precious. Loved your description of your father; he sounds much likr mine :) As always, your description are unique and telling. I dom't like the nrgatine tone but that's only because I car about you ;) Two points below, a favorite line and one that has a typo :) Hugs, Marcia

Love this line, and the conceopt of going through boxes of old photos as, 'sorting memories' :)

their songs promise(s) there will be sunshine on my windowsill - songs is plural you need promise without the 's'.

Wow! I'm betting this vignette wins. You capture moods of pain, joy, regret, pity My heart went out to Rusty and the dog and I wonder why you feel you failed your son. One thing is for sure. You never fail the reader. You need to put your essays together and get an agent, Susan. I don't think you realize just how good you are.

Oh Susan, this is hard to read - though I'm not, of course, saying I can't handle your reality. How presumptuous would that be?
I am so sorry that you feel this bleakness and I wish there were something I could say that would help. But I imagine when one is depressed, no logic, no words of reassurance are worth a lot.
Can I just mention a few tiny things that occurred to me as I read:

their songs promises - promise?

I remember you talking before about your horse. Spooked by an aeroplane?

Only the good die young. I will live in misery for a very long time. - That is so sad to read and to know you feel, even if you know it's not true.

surgeons scalpel, - surgeon's

Each of us are naught but a will-o-the-wisp - each of us IS naught... (each one of us)

A powerful piece of writing, which deserves to do well in the contest, I am sure.
Love
Sally

Susan,

This is a sad story, well written with no faults that I could find. Photographs bring back a lot of memories. When my wife's mother passed, my wife looked through a huge collection of photos, including many of her father's first wife, who died young.

Well written and interesting story. The camera is an amazing piece of technology. You have shared some of the moments in your life in this writing, and your reality is the same as anybody elses. Happy and sad, tough yet good.
Thank you for sharing

hugs
