Another descriptive shor and powerful story. You and Spiritual Echo have a way to bring depth and soul into your writing which is easier said than done. Stan

Ah, life and love is complicated, isn't it? This is a nicely framed moment, a point of change where the way forward is clear, even welcome, yet there is hesitation. No matter how inviting the road ahead is, it still may be filled with unseen boulders, and change is hard.

A poignant story. Thanks for a good read. Anna

this is very well written, susan, you did a great job writing this flash fiction about the man who buried a wife that was dissatisfied with her life and even though their marriage was dysfunctional he missed her.

I enjoyed this one, Susan, though I confess it didn't grab me quite as much as other stories you have posted in recent weeks. That's not to say it's not good, but you have set the bar so high, you have given yourself a hard act to follow!
The grayness is cleverly woven through the story, both in colour and mood, and specially appreciated the thought that the man had been invisible in the marriage.
And I am sure the mix of emotions is probably representative - relief mingled with fear of being alone.
Perhaps this sounded such a complex relationship that it was hard to capture in so few words.
However, you got me reading it four or five times, so clearly it made an impression on me.
Always a pleasure to read your offerings.
My best to you,
Sally

Hi Sally! you are so good to me. This was just a sort of metaphor?? for my own misery. I don't know. I have wasted too many years ,and now health trouble will steal the rest. I do thank you for each and every one of your notes...I couldn't be luckier than to have you as a friend. xoxo. Susan

Suse, the gray area in any relationship is always there. Seems the one in this story brought a feeling of too little to late. Yet, at the same time, I still had the feeling the man wasn't really there, as he said his last goodbye, and walked away with the breeze of freedom. Well done, but pretty depressing write here, my friend...hug, Susan

The dull grayness of your widower's life permeates throughout your story. I can't imagine how his depressive lifestyle could motivate him to continue in this loveless marriage for forty-five years? Liked how you relate that the grayness of her physical life will mingle with the soil turning it gray.

Share a smile while there's time
Maybe even a laugh or two
A soft word, a loving look
A gentle touch would be good
They make the bad days easier to handle

Well done, Buck

Wow, Susan. This was a heavy read that tugged at the heart but told a story so real and far too common. If I could have given a six star rating on this one, I would have. I look forward to your next submission...Tim
