The honesty in these lines touched my heart - whose "cutting voice" is no longer a threat - quieted to that of a dependent, meek & polite person. I read forgiveness for the past in the lines as well as grief to see the life of a loved one reach its end. No negatives.

I love the poem. Even bullies die like the rest of us, at the tender mercies of the living. You are there now. That is your way to forgive him. He sowed his own seeds. He will have to deal with his maker while you lead a good life. Great work.

You are so great at this poetry stuff. I'm jealous! I knew you were talking about grandpa before I read your author notes confirming it.

the shrinking of a life - a compelling phrase/concept
I love that entire stanza
I get such a feel for how his demeanor on his deathbed contrasted with the fear he inspired when the narrator was a child
the foreign tongue line is brilliant
This is stunning in each and every line. :-) Brooke

This is the second poem I have read today about the final days of a parent. What's nice/sad about these is that we can all relate, and will be there one day, once again..sadly. :)

This is no good for a Sunday afternoon, I am reading all these 'Sad' pieces and crying, they move me so much and this one is absolutely no exception. This is so moving and then made even more by your footnote.

Most touching...Dinah
