With me at that age it was the Bobbsey Twins and Freddy the Pig, not Nancy Drew :-)
I love your litany of illustrative examples
the days of my journey's - drop the apostrophe
Love all people - you're a better man than I, Gunga Din - there are plenty I don't come close to loving :-)
I love your poignant closing :-) Brooke

A fine piece of creative writing. I am sure you'll find your place in the sun sooner than later. I even think you're close to it. Ride on the wind, float on the waves and reach for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Good luck.

Susan,
This is an excellent account of how a young girl found a quiet place under the apple trees. I enjoyed reading this post and found nothing to criticize.

I'm breathless with admiration for your writing technique and unique imagination --the way you brought the crows in, for example. You covered the bad along with the good--no sugar-coating. But when down, child who reads this will head for your legacy--peace beneath the apple tree. A virtual six, but then I'd give you one every time. Hugs, Shari

Hi Shari! Thank you! Just glad you enjoyed my time traveling! Sure wish I could go back...good old 20/20 hindsight. Oh well. I would have pursued my art and started writing YEARS ago! Lol! Too late now ... hugs and smiles! Susan

Nice job very well written.
The only thing I noticed and it's just for information only.
The red fern grew between the two graves of his beloved redbone hounds.
Thanks for sharing your work.

Your 'Apple Tree Bees' is a wonderful response to this challenge. I liked how your took me back in years by listing classic books of my childhood. (Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy misteries, Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows) I also like where you say the old crow is the protector of your child's soul. Just as your encourage him/her to once again seek the shelter and comfort of the old apple tree, and the happy memories of teaching kittens to climb to elevate the hurt in the child's heart; you soothe mine.

I enjoyed this immensely. You really hit the nail on the head with this one. So beautiful, heart warming and even got a tear or two in my eyes. Marvelous work with this one. I forgot to wish you all the best in this fun and interesting contest.

Beautiful story Susan. I realize how much like your childhood my own was. I read every one of the books you mentioned only my tree was a pine which I used to sit nestled in his branches. My heart was broken when hogs and chickens were slaughtered. At least, I met the right guy and married young without the heartbreak of some jerk wanting me only for sex, but I had my share of pain when my first child died. Her name was Susan.

Oh Beth! I am just so sorry about your daughter. I too lost a baby. Her name was Beverly Ann. In fact I am needing to buy a new marker for her little grave. I have let too many other things keep me away. You and I are a lot alike...I'm glad. Thank you Beth. I hope you enjoy the upcoming warmer days too...luv, Susan

As your well written story talks about, I too, as a youth would get lost in my books - traveling to far away places and experience adventures otherwise not possible. How wonderful life can be between hardback and paperback covers.
Thanks.for sharing this. JW

I used this artwork once for a poem I posted here. Yes, I too once traveled the world, battled pirates and explored exotic islands and never left whereever I could find a place to sit---which at times was difficult.
But, somehow I got books, Then, I got to travel and do battle----but somehow, it has never been the same. And, I was much happier with my literary friends.
Thanks, Suse for leaving a tear or two in an old man's eyes.
