Such a lovely story. And you know, the first thing I did was looking at that horse and saying, "Oh, my, this is the most beautiful horse I've ever seen" and then I wanted to see if you had written anything about it in your author's notes and you were saying the same thing. The man in the story was indeed a lucky man to have such a friend, and so many other friends too. Thank you for this story.

Hey Susan
You have laced together a superb story. I like the fact that you show your inner voice so well. Such a sad beautiful story and from a man who is horse crazy. Thanks for this

Hi Bear! Wow! Thank YOU! I'm very happy you read and enjoyed this...I love my horses, but may have to sell them soon. Everything is just too expensive. Sad...hug, Susan

Oh, I HATE movies with sad endings! This was a charming little piece full of love and friendship! I do have a few little suggestions for you to take or toss: "And he stopped often too" I would start the sentence without the "and" and drop the "too". "He stopped often" OR "He would stop often"
Also, "The sun shone soft and warm on the village where the man who was alone, but not lonely lived" I would switch "lived" from the end of the sentence to after "man"
"on the village where the man lived, alone but not lonely"
Just some thoughts to take or toss. How are you?

This is a nice story. It is always a good thing if a person has friends and/or family that cares about them. Too often who hear about a person who dies alone, and no discovered for days.

Thanks for sharing this. JW

This was a beautiful work and a tribute to a man and his horse. I am not a horse lover, I am in awe of them but this is a fantastic work and it warmed my heart.

Looking forward to seeing more of your works

You introduce this main character effectively in your opening paragraph
store-bought carrots - add hyphen
took one's breath away - add apostrophe for possessive
he was unable to rise, the - use a period there
What a poignant closing when this pleasant, generous man finds out how many people, as well as animals, care about him :-) Brooke

Hi Susan,

This picture of the horse is so beautiful, how I would love to own a horse like that. I love this story and the diligent man who always fed his animal friends. I like the ending as it give an up lift to the sadness of the man being so ill. Well done....blessings, chey

HI Chey! Thank you! I do too! I googled them, (Gypsy Vanner's) but of course, they are way expensive...but so pretty. Oh well. I have three I don't need. Hay is over four dollars a bale now. Worse than gasoline just to putt around on a horse and all. I'm silly. Thank you again Chey, I'm so happy you liked this one! x. Susan

What a wonderful picture and a wonderful story. I love the story. It's emotional written and it touched me.
Animals are our best friends, they feel when we need them and give us comfort in hard times. Great job. Fia

Hi Fia...thank you for enjoying this one. My little cat came to me last night when I was in such pain, sounding like an idiot...her little 'butterfly' kisses helped me get thru it. I can't imagine life without animals. Even the scary ones...thank you again Fia...this note means a lot. Susan

What a perfectly lovely,
heart-felt story.... that
man living alone had friends
he didn't know of, and was
certainly loved by his
animals.

It's hard to believe, I know, but I've not a six left and it's only a Monday!! Otherwise, I give this the six it deserves. Other weeks I'm sometimes left with sixes as I can't give them where they're deserved, but never before have I been without so early in the week.

Thanks for sharing this, Susan.

Margaret

Hi Susan:)
A beautiful horse is surely a great inspiration. I'm sure the needs of his animal friends inspired his recovery, but best of all the lonely man learned that he was never truly alone because both the animals he treated and the villagers were there for him when need.

A pleasant Irish tale.

Love and Irish hugs, dear friend,

Roger

1. They expected him, but he was unable to rise the fever weakened [him] and laid him low, {I think you need the promoun 'him', otherwise it reads as if the fever was weakening rather than the man.}

Hi Roger! Thank you!! I'm SO glad you enjoyed this...if you ever want to, I hope you'll watch the movie called "The Garage"...filmed in Ireland, a sad tale of a man accused of allowing a teen to see porn and drink a beer. SO sad...and how it would really be too, I'm afraid. The ending will break your heart...so I had to rewrite the script. Sort of... Just because...lol! Hugs and many more thank you's my friend..Susan

Yeah, Susan we had one of those guys in the town where I went to High School. I suppose that I got a twisted sexual education, but fortunately, having lived on a ranch with all manner of livestock, I knew the truth about the 'Birds and Bees'. So far as I know, his porn inflicted no permanet harm to my morals.
