Hi Bev,

Your story is well told, well written, and very interesting. It has a lot of information that I hadn't heard before. Very sad that Thomas Jefferson didn't make provisions for Sally Hemmings' freedom.

Elsewhere, Hessian officer Jacob Rubsamen, who visited the Jefferson's at Monticelle (Monticello?) in 1780,

This is truly an excellent narrative in every way. You have accurately and effectively told the historical story, parts of which were not talked about freely until the last few decades! Good job

I am new to fanstory and have only been reviewing for a couple of days. That being said, this is by far the best thing I have read so far! An interesting read, easy to follow, excellent mechanics. Way to go! I hope my own writing improves to the level you have reached. Thanks for an informative and interesting essay - Amy

Hi writingfundimension,

I'm always a sucker for real history and this was fascinating. I find it difficult to imagine "owning" someone or being "owned," if one was lucky I suppose you had a reasonable "master" who behaved rather like the better type of employer today, if not ...

This is well written, my only comment is that when quoting, the convention is to annotate the source - but I guess you know that anyway!

Patrick

Thanks, Patrick. I really appreciate your great review. If I'm understanding the annotation aspect correctly, would it be enough to have it in the author's notes, as I did in the this piece? What would be a better way to accomplish that? I know that you write a lot of historical pieces, so I am especially pleased by your comments. Warm regards, Bev

Hi Bev, I think it needs some form of annotation. With my story "A Baltic Affair" I used the "Footnote" function in my Pages (Mac's equivalent of Word) program. When you copy the work to paste it into Evil Eddy, if you use the Advanced Editor it pastes the annotation, links and footnotes straight into the main body and works perfectly.

Thanks for responding about the browser, it seems to be only one or two people who have a problem so it has to be something in their computers.

Gosh! This was great. i don't remember ever reading that Jefferson was, in essence, 'married' to one of his wife's slaves. Certainly shows the paradoxes of the man. Supposedly he believed that slavery was 'bad' but he did benefit from it and did not free his woman at his death. How ironic
i liked the use of the incorrect grammar. it lends authenticity to the story.
I like the narrative here a lot.

Thanks for writing this informative piece of history. Perfect timing for this president's weekend. I knew a little of Jefferson's affair with Sally Hemmings, but not much about his wife. Thanks for sharing. Linda

I couldn't stop reading. Your history of the Jeffersons is clear and so well documented. I applaud an intelligent post on FanStory that is not all up in the air with long words.
Thank you for sharing. I hope you do more like this. It must take a lot of time to research and get it all together. Good job.
