Honeycomb and Nancy: I recognize this old sewing machine in my grandmother's room. She loved sewing quilts and clothes. The kids had hand me downs and looked grand. Jeans were worn in the country doing chores. My mom dressed up going to church or to town. So many stories to tell and faces to meet. God knows each one of us by name. Maybe, the genealogy will have lists of your family and mine. We have ours in a cook book. But, who do we resemble? Where did our eye color come from. It's good to share family history with our kids. You have proven yourself here. You still are a star to me! Love you Nancy! flylikeaneagle

Thank you for the six Nancy! That was a delight. This is the second poem I wrote on FS. I was new to poetry and I learned about counting syllable quickly. I fumbled around with the posting for a few times before I got it down pat. I don't know the names of some but I feel the love for them when I look at their faces. Hugs. Nancy

Well done, Nancy, we have struck some dead ends trying to trace our family trees, Elaine's father was actually adopted and also her mother, who was likewise adopted from a wed less mother, complications my side too, oh well sigh... Loved reading this, I too love those old fashioned photos of mysterious ancestry, I love looking at them, lovely even poem, in lovely rhyme, abcb, and excellent language, blessings, Roy

I have one picture that sparked my obsession with finding my family. It was the Strattan Family.
Benjamin Clark Strattan. They were in the attire of that period setting on their front porch. I have always wanted to write a poem about them. Maybe I should Thanks for the review Roy. Enjoy the week. Nancy

This is my first 8/6/8/6 rhyme. You've written a lovely piece. Nice flow, nice cadence, and a wonderful cautionary message. People need to write on the backs of their pictures and say who's who. Well done.

Yes. I have been lax at that but there are so many I would have had writers cramp. LOL Thanks for reviewing this oldie Rose. Enjoy the rest of the day! Nancy

Well writtien with perfect tempo and cadence. The flow is so good it makes this a joy to read. The rhyme seems natural and unforced. A very nice poem

Nancy,

This is soooo true, and something I think many of us have to deal with in our box of family photos. UGH. I was a scrapbook consultant for several years - and tried to PREACH against this sort of thing. Good luck!

VERY well written, the rhyme and cadence were lovely!

I know. All these beautiful 1800's pictures and many of them are familiar looking strangers. Thanks for the review Robyn. Nancy

I love the picture of the antique Singer. My mother had one exactly like it. Although she had a more modern electric machine that did everything imaginable, for her daily sewing, she always chosen the tried and true treadle. She claimed it gave her more control.

I can relate to you dilemma with the picture you describe here. My aunt Macy did a family tree during the last decade and a half of her life. She was meticulous in her research, even sharing her notes with a college professor who was writing a book about the families of the county in Kentucky where she and my father were born. As a result of her work and the now published book, I have a record of my ancestry from my grandfather back to Jamestown and Plymouth, as I have ancestors from both colonies. It's fascinating what you learn about common people from your past and occasionally something about famous or notorious people they knew.

This is an absolutely awesome piece. First, it flowed without a hitch. Never skipped a beat. And I have so many pictures, with no name, date or anything, so I can sure relate. Now that my Mother is gone, too, I don't have a hope of finding out who these people are in the photos, and why someone thought I should have them.!!??? Great poem, and well deserving of my first six of the day!

Thank you Linda! I am going to repost some of my first tries. I think they were good but didn't get much attention because I was a newbie. Thanks for reading and encouraging review. Nancy

HI! Honeycomb. To put your mind at rest, immediately, yes it is a great poem! The theme is very good and will appeal to many readers, as searching for information about the family's past is very topical at the moment, as the number of wes sites offering information to searchers will prove. You have used a fairly lighthearted approach to the contents of "The Box", which gives the verse a nice rhythem and, so it flows well.A really enjoyable read which reminded me, that I too wish to trace my family tree! wiljacro.

I like this poem, but I own an identical Singer treadle sewing machine. It is a family heirloom and it still works. The machine is on the top and it was converted to electric in the sixties but works either way.
