This is such a moving poem, I was in tears by the end of it and I don't even like horses, I find them a bit too scary. But you describe George and his horse buddy Patches so wonderfully, they seemed to me to be more people than horses, and the comparison you made when Patches went to stand over his friend's grave, about soldiers guarding the tombs of their comrades, conjured up powerful images. Excellent work.

Blessings,

~ J.

Writingfundimension, this was a touching story. For those of us who have lived around these grand animals and shared the grief when euthanasia was necessary, it brings back memories. And their barnmates know.
Good job.

You made me cry. I had horses until I left home, so this really touched me. I know your friend must have loved this essay honoring her pal. Excellent

Thank you so very much, Southern Writer. Catherine has moved away and I no longer see her. But, yes, I think she would be very pleased. Your generosity is so appreciated! Warm regards, Bev

Hi Bev - a beautiful story and written in so few words. To me, the sign of a good writer is when you get beyond the written word and start "seeing" the story. You succeeded in this one. Regards, Bill

A well-written and moving story, Bev. Your descriptions are so good and I feel like I'm in the pasture at George's celebration party. You had me crying with Patches grieving for his friend. Great story, Bev!

I love the opening line very much, it gives us the readers a feeling that touches the heart.

"The wake took place on a hill overlooking the clear, aquamarine waters of Lake Michigan." - This line paints a wonderful image to the scene, which also gives us a chill about the purpose of it, euthanizing the horse, George, though it brings peace to his sole as he has undergone a lot of suffering. He deserves to enjoy the beauty of his surrounding with the people who cares for him at least before he rests in peace for eternity.

I love horses very much that I intended to read this story until the end, and I felt so sad for George's life to have such an ending, though it's understood.

I loved the ending too, especially the part where Patches lingers around George's grave. It's touching... over all it was a well written story.

Perhaps this could be a true story, if then I pray that George will be remembered whenever someone reads this. Anyway thanks for sharing this with us on Fanstory.com

Tc, have a nice day...
BHana.

Quite beautifully written and emotionally touching. Perhaps it is the fact I run an animal rescue, including equines, that your story brought tears to my eyes that combined with the glorious spirit of horses.

Your descriptions carry your readers to this place without bogging us down in details and you achieve quite well the telling of a non-fiction tale. Not everyone can do that well, they get caught up in "telling" and lose story.

Thank you.

Hello, and thank you for this poignant, touching story about George. I know you have already garnered many fine reviews for this short story, but I wanted to add my comments, after I finished reading. Your opening line was a terrific hook, how could I have stopped there?
To be honest, I just received a 'ranking' notice from FS for short story authors and I was trying to find out where I am now(somewhere still way down there). When I saw your pen name at the top of the list, I thought I would read something of yours to see if I could pick up some ways to improve my own writing, and I did. You broke your story into nine paragraphs, all about the same size, something I have not done. Your story was fast paced, but still had a very smooth flow.
And, it is just a great story!
Thanks again, irish

Hello, Irish. What a beautiful review here. And I am so honored by what you've said regarding my writing. I have a long way to go myself, and I'm happy, for now, to be in the top ten. But, it's a long year and I know that there are so many, many fine writers who will be posting great pieces all year long. You now, if I were to say anything as advice it would be to post a lot and offer good rewards for folks to view your writing. I didn't discover the banner ad supreme until late last year and I've been on the site for almost two years! I've found that once a piece gets a good momentum, there'll be those who review just out of curiosity. Anyway, good luck to us both in the year of writing and I'll be sure to stop by and check out your work. Blessings, my friend. Bev

What a very sad but sweet story. I did enjoy the part where Patches was standing over his grave. So sweet to throw him a party. Great read.

This is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read. It brought near tears at the same time as it brought admiration for the way your friend and George handled his passing. Truly a lovely piece of writing.
