Bravo, bravo, bravo. I will tell every woman on Fanstory I know to read this. A great write. I can tell you have had much experience. I have had to order Mammograms in my day. I never liked them. But even when women go to the doctor. They don't generally like him doing the self exam anyway. And I am tired of getting dirty looks from them. The best way you could write this is to also inform women of the best way to healthy breasts. Women don't do things thorough enough. If you are interested in a PHd in nuclear medicine has to say PM me. Great write that I think all woman should read. I do hope you PM me. Great job.

Thank you so very much, Eric. I especially appreciate your professional perspective on mammograms and will be sure to PM you soon on that. I worked for a surgeon for twenty five years and did learn quite a lot, unfortunately, about breast cancer. That was the time when radical mastectomies were the norm! We have come such a long, long way and yet women don't take advantage of the great technology. It's sad when it's someone who has the insurance coverage, especially. And now we have the specter of increasing incidences of breast cancer in men. Thanks again for your extremely generous rating and review. I appreciate you! Warm regards, Bev

MRIs are expensive because the machines are expensive to buy and the investment must be recouped. If more breast exams were done by MRI, the volume of use would lower the cost per exam. What's the point of a diagnostic test, regardless of cost, that routinely misses the disease it's supposed to detect? If men had to routinely undergo this painful testing, improvements would be made. :) Nancy

Makes absolute sense to me, Nancy. Like you, I think it's a poor excuse - not cost effective to study on the normal population - not to do the right thing. Thanks so much for stopping by and offering your superb review and insights. I really appreciate it. Bev

Good post to write about. I have a more or less similar problem , a possible positive family history and they are lumpy and big, so I never self-examine as I always feel something. Just go yearly for mammography. The MRI was new for me; must ask the surgeon about that next year.

Thank you, Ine. Ah, you do understand very well then. The self-examination part seems to be an important key which is why I am going to make an effort to do it anyway even though it kinda gives me the whillies. I appreciate your great review, my friend. Warmly, Bev

I think this is a great piece you have written here! Very informative and educational. Digital mammograms are also a good option especially for myself as a breast cancer survivor. Well written, great job!

Hi, Allison78. Congratulations on being a breast cancer survivor! That's great. I believe our local community uses digital mammography now for most mammograms. I've noticed quite a difference in the time it takes to get them done. I so appreciate your very personal perspective and wonderful review.

Hiya writerwish. Good to hear from you, my friend. It's the self-exam part that creeps me out, too. And you make a good point, a thorough self-examination is not just patting the surface. It involves squeezing the nipple for discharge and a firm, steady pressure throughout - that can hurt. But, it's a first-line defense against breast cancer, so very important. I so appreciate your awesome review. Thanks so much! Bev

Fantastic essay, Bev!! If your writing can convince one woman to get a mammo who's been avoiding it, then what a wonderful service you will provide. With EARLY detection, so many forms of breast cancer can be treated and cured. And you're absolutely right...it's like putting the crepe into too small of a pan...but just for a few seconds.
Great job!

Hi, Karyn. When I worked for a surgeon thirty five years ago, the mastectomy approach used was generally a radical mastectomy. I still recall the trauma as a result of seeing my first patient follow-up for that surgery. In the twenty five years of working there, new technology came on the scene. And, now, with computers...it's mind-boggling. We have come such a long, long way. And still women, who have insurance coverage, prefer to let this go. Thanks for your words of support that are lent credibility because of your professional affiliation, Karyn. Your review is so appreciated, my friend. Warm hugs, Bev

Awesome essay. Bev. My mother had many of those lumps in her breasts, but she has always been quite slim. None were cancerous, and she has the same lumps in her arms still today. Her old surgeon died and she doesn't worry any more, (99 years old tomorrow.) She refuses to have any more mammograms because of the discomfort. (In those circumstances I wouldn't either.) I should be lucky enough to get to 69, let alone 99.
My appetite is back. That must mean I'm better now and I am going to have to get back to that essay. I really do want to finish it... just lacking motivation at present. Giddy

Thank you, Giddy. You make a very good point, there is a time when mammograms no longer are recommended - particularly in women your mother's age. I think there is a strong tie-in with hormones and it makes sense that certain hormones are no longer in the system of older women to the same extent. So glad to hear that you are feeling better. It's hard to focus when you are in pain, especially back pain. Thanks again for the fab review, Giddy. Love, Bev

This is a informative article about why is important to have mammograms, Bev. I also know from experience. A mammogram showed suspicious calcification's in my one breast and it was caught at the very beginning, stage zero. That means it had not spread anywhere. Thanks to mammograms I still have both my breasts. I agree. Mammograms are important.

Thank you so very much, April. I'm so glad you had a positive resolution to your experience of having a breast calcification. It's tough waiting for the diagnosis after the biopsy and I have friends who will not get mammograms anymore because of that. I don't quite get that and it makes me sad. I so appreciate your great reveiw, my friend. Blessings, Bev
