Barbara,

You shouldn't kick yourself in the butt so hard. You're not the best poet on the site, (IMHO, adewpearl is) but I enjoy reading your poems. I also don't consider myself a poet, but what I write isn't exactly romance.

I'm still in the edit cave. It will be a while yet before I write some new stuff.

Happy New Year to you and your family.

Dave

I think that expressing your feelings rates a few stars, don't you? Thanks for sharing the amusing reviews and your thoughts on the difference between prose and poetry!

Hi Barbara:)
I know the feeling. I have been a professional writer for over forty years, but I would have starved, had I foolishly tried to live from poetry or romance novels.. Writing about science, medicine and technology is what paid the bills. I do aspire to write science fiction, but other fiction has not been fruitful, so I mainly do fiction with Marilyn.

Still I enjoy using poetry to express ideas and emotions when the mood strikes. I may upset my way of expressing feelingspoetry purists who only care about the format and technical features of poems, but I don't care. Poetry is personal and I will post what I feel. It lets me be myself, just as you revealed Big Boy's misadventure. If we want to tell the world, so be it. If reviewers read my 'stuff,' okay, but don't tell me what I meant to say, should not have said or how assonance was missing. They won't make me feel like an ass. If my stuff is THAT BAD,s let them get get their points (and posting money) by adding or removing commas to someone else's work.

Another thing, although I doubt it ever applies to you or me, is that reviewers will ignore warning labels and even mature blocks and then complain that something is too vulgar, too violent. too naughty and therefore offends them. Why do they take a look. Is it prurient interest or do they not understand that warning allow them to bypass the things that offend them?

Happy New Year and should you decide to tell more secrets about your pets in poetic form I will read it, but I won't be judgmental. I will just draw my own conclusion about the merits and be honest about what I like.

Love and Irish hugs. (even this close used only for sweet ladies offends the sensibilities of some reviewers. So be it!)

Roger

Hi, Barbara, I must say your reflection on writing is interesting and stirs something in me. I've never called myself a poet and will never dare to, but as a short story writer I'm more confident. I think everybody has her/his own call, but it is okay if sometimes we 'surrender' to sudden urges to write poetry. I understand when you say: My poetry reflected more of who I am as a person than my romance novels. I guess it's true to me too. Thanks for sharing.

Of course there's a way to rate this. You've expressed yourself well in both mediums, but of course you're more articulate in prose (where you've had the most practice). Glad to hear you're not giving up on your romance writing. But you needn't abandon poetry. You just need to invent more hours (and when you figure out how, let me know)! Happy New Year, Barbara! :) Nancy

Thank you for the kind review. I barely have enough time to do anything right now. To be honest, I am dreading going back to work tomorrow. These two weeks off went way to fast.

I found your words here comforting, barbara. I think that everyone who sticks to writing prose, primarily, always feels they are just a little less than the poets. At least, I do. Yet, the top novelists on this site often use beautifully poetic images. So, I've concluded the two are never really separate. I did find your poem as solid as any I've read on the site, barbara, and loved the lines: 'pleas take a poetry class...this sounds like a singing bass'. Too funny. Blessings, Bev

Actually many of the lines are from reviewers who tore up my poem about Big Boy's problems. Thank you for the kind review.

Oh, I see. Still enjoyed the way you put it together! Bev

Hi Barbara,

At last, someone who feels the same as I do about the mysteries of writing poetry!

Like you, I find it much easier to write prose and to stick with things I understand!

Hello bw, This was a thought provoking little post, reflecting on your past year with FS. I admire your delving into the realm of poetic insight and recording those thoughts. I find with poetry, it isn't the listener, it is the reader and the reader begins with you. If your heart dictates that you write in rhyme and meter, than do so. If it calls for the freedom of free verse, answer the muses beckoning. Let your heart override the sensibilities of your mind, for poetry is the whimsical notions of the heart, whether they be love or angst. Best to you in 2012. ;) Chrisfiore
