What a lovely Thanksgiving story.I like your original point of view with the dog as narrator. The repetition of "It's my job" is a delightful touch that adds to the endearing quality of the dog's personality. Adding the blind child is another brilliant touch which further endears Butterball to the reader. Great picture in that closing sentence, too.

Hi Susan :)
I don't have a "Sixer" for this great, wonderful, warm story so I'll award two virtual "Twelvers" and say you did an excellent job of pacing a beautiful story through the eyes of
Butterball.

Susan,
This is a really good story about a rescued dog who faces grave temptation. But he's a good boy. Will they feed him goodies from the table?
I really enjoyed this read and found nothing to criticize.

Although the contest calls for a poem, your story is poetic and touches the heart. The discipline of a service-animal is incredible and you did an excellent job in showing that. Love is woven into this special story--and that matters more than any contest rule. Thank you for writing this. Blessings, Hector

Hi again! It said prose was okay too? I read it twice to be sure! I was glad, as T-day is my second favorite holiday of course. I'm putting a tree up soon...and to me, it's a birthday celebration...and another day of thanks. I am thrilled you enjoyed this Hector....hug! Susan

You're welcome, Susan. We have assembled our artificial tree (courtesy of either HSN or QVC) and all the wreaths and holiday fixings are displayed to my wife's satisfaction. I see that your birthday is coming up dear friend! A lovely time of year to celebrate. Blessings, Hector

hello Susan
This is a remarkable contest entry. I loved the nice down home feel it carried with it. Butter is a dog for the best in us. I fell in love with him because he is such a "DOG". Nicely done and good luck

So nicely done, Suse. Ah, what delicious torture it must be for a dog on Thanksgiving day. And a good dog, at that.
Your perspective resonates for me.
I can imagine a dog have such thoughts.
And I know he will be rewarded for his patience,
his vigilance, and for just being a good dog.
Peace, Lee

This is so precious. Wonderful story about a very good dog. I can relate to this one. My sister had a very big dog that wasn't well trained. One Thanksgiving we were gathered in the living room waiting for the turkey to cool. Suddenly my sister's dog flew by in a blur, out the door and down the street...carrying the whole turkey in his mouth. We still had a pretty good dinner, minus the main course. As you probably know, I am not good at flash fiction (I'm Irish and it's genetic) but this is a terrific story for this contest and I sincerely wish you all the best.

Hi Sasha! WELL!! I wanted to have this dog do just that!!! And thought it would be too heavy for a dog to actually run away with!! I really did, now I wish I had gone with my instinct!! It's hilarious!! BUT I would be SOoooooo mad!! OH all the work, all the anticipation!! GONE in an instant! BAD BAD DOG!! But, they know not what they do...or do they? LOL!!! What a memory though!! It hurts to laugh, but well worth it, thanks for brightening my evening Smurphy!! HUG and smiles! Susan
