Cool story, bullying has more than one side to it doesn't it? This boy probably should have been suspended, but I'll bet if someone said a bad thing again about his family he would do it again. I'd be proud of him. thanks.

Thanks for reading and your comments. I feel the same as you. I know I would have expected my son to stand up for his sister! Bill

This is a very timely subject especially since we just passed the anniversary of 9/11. I think you did a great thing by letting someone who could act about the situation. A lot of people wouldn't do that. I love the irony at the end. It made me smile.

Great story and you can't blame the child for wanting to stay home - going back to school meant more bullying, more teasing and more grind. What kid wouldn't want a break from it all? :-)

Bad for me too. I'm pretty sure I could have convinced Bader to mow my front lawn! Thanks for reading. Bill

I'm giving you a six for doing the right thing. I sat here and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Give Bader and his sisters a hug for me because it sounds like they could use one. Great job and thanks for taking a part in your neighbors life. My neighbors were the same way and although us kids sometimes hated it because we couldn't get away with anything it was nice having the extra person to talk to. Wonderful, wonderful job.

Thanks for the wonderful compliment of the six. Bader's sister was at the house today with my wife learning how to cook cookies. I love my neighbors! Bill

I'm glad you stood up for Bader. it is
so sad that so much bullying goes on.
At least schools are trying to prevent it now.
My oldest brother used to get beat up
regularly at school.
I like how you included your own story
and compared it to the boy's.

Bhogg,
No good deed goes unpunished. This is a good story with a good message. Bullying has always been a problem in school. I liked your ending.

Bader was probably enjoying his little vacation, probably driving his mother nuts too. You did a good thing and I am sure both of Bader's parents appreciated it. Bader will too when he really thinks about it.

Thanks Patty! It's funny, but most people assumed that Bader was reluctant to be engaged again. My thoughts were exactly like yours. What ... no more vacation. He and I hung out today cleaning gutters. Thanks for reading and your continued support. Bill

We all need to read a story like this once in awhile, a good, ole, right-is-right and wrong-is-wrong story where there is actually some excellent intervention (some might call it interference - I say GO BOY) which results in justice being served. Mr. Bill, you're the kind of guy we all need for a neighbor. Great story!

Who wouldn't want to stay home knowing he would go back and face the same bullies probably hurling the same insults or worse. As for the kid getting suspended for bringing a GI Joe, what in the name of God are we coming to?
Great post, Bill.
My only suggestion for improvement is:I walked outside the school room at recess and saw a kid on the back of my brother, who was prone on the ground. He was whaling away on my brother. (The use of 'on my brother' twice in two consecutive sentences is a little distracting.)

Thanks for reading Connie! I massaged that passage you mentioned several times, but am going to look at again. I appreciate you taking the time to really read and suggest improvement. Much appreciated! Bill

I liked your story and agree with some
of it. It was well written and flowed
very nicely. Good use of dialogue.
It seems you went the extra mile for
Bader but as a typical youth he did not
see or appreciate your effort. I especially
liked how you included some of your own memories
and history into the story. I think this gave me a
better understanding why you would feel the way you did.
Thanks
