This poem is awe-inspiring ... and the author's note at the end invites a thoughtful pause, and a realization of vulnerable each of us is, and how dependant we may be on the most unexpected source of salvation.

Hi there! I love this different take on war. They used to use pigeons and mules, horses too. And dogs. Poor animals. All for what...? ANyway, this is a lovely poem. Perfect pix for it too.! Susan

I know it happens and will continue to happen, but I still pray and hope someday this will all stop. That no man, woman, or child will ever have to fear war and its consequences. That the last man has held the last pigeon during war. A great write my friend.

A good poem. You greatly heighten dramatic tension with the use of short lines and staccato rhythm. The language use is simple and direct and conveys your message clearly and emotively.

Say, no dolt with this bird do, mate.
This is masterful writing.
Birds are good game for the poet

Let the other side of the brain go on complaining,
this is good work here yo are doing
Do you like Crows? Just wondering.

I don't know. Great bird for Edgar Allen Poe. I remember my BB's used to fall off their feathers when I tried to shoot them with my BB gun. Thanks for reading George.

Your poem is a lovely dedication to the pigeon, which held in its beating heart the desperate hopes and dreams of many a soldier in the war. Well done.

Go my fellow

stout winged warrior

And save me from

my fate

I cannot imagine how the soldier would feel.
You would have to be that soldier in that predicament to understand such feelings. It is beyond imagination.

For all soldiers in this predicament past and future I say thank you, God speed; but for the grace of god; there go I.

The Auld Yin.

That's funny. Not humorous funny, coincidental funny. This poem brought to my mind the same phraes, "but for the grace of God, there go I". Thank you.

There is plenty man can learn from animals. He can even learn to live in peace. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for an easy read.

I love this poem. Right from the start the reference to 'O Valiant Heart' sung on Remembrance Day gave us the solemnity. I loved every word of the part ' I hold the bird so differently now ...homeward restlessness' it was so beautiful and full of meaning. Your ending made me tear up - I could see the soldier saying the words 'Go my fellow stout winged warrior and save me from my fate.'

Very powerful write about the hope the soldiers ~ trembling hands as they let the pigeons fly ~ my life beats within it's breast. Good imagery in this free verse, but I can only imagine.
