We have the same problem in Australia. I guess if you're the subject of racism you do get very sensitive. It certainly is a difficult problem and one that I don't think will be fixed any time soon. Your story was were very well set out and easy to understand. I thought you were very wise the way you handled the question from Payne.

Thanks Giddy - I hope that you aren't from the part of Australia getting all of the rain and flooding. It looks awful watching on the news here.

I am heading for Bundaberg today to take my mum home â?? floods have gone down there now â?? but it was one of the worst hit. There are worse to come in other parts of Queensland unfortunately. It's tough for the farmers who have endured years of drought just prior to this.

Happy New Year, Bill. Thanks for giving us this glimpse into your relationship with your grandson, Payne. I enjoyed this lesson on racism too.

Great entry and I wish you all the best of luck. =D

while not "Websteresque"
I like this term though I use Oxford.

"adulterated"
I'm enjoying these words. I term it as being tainted by harsh reality of life.

"Well, how come you look at all the girls?"
I'm still working on that one.
Gotcha! =D

You know Bill, I love this one for many reasons. First, it's very well written and easy to relate to. Next it attacks one of our worst embarrassments today ... racism, the the best is the final dilemma posed by your grandson. Gotta love the humor in that one. Bravo for a brilliant write here.

Hi,

What a touching story of a conversation between you and your grandson. Difficult questions, and I think you handled it well.

I've re-read your story twice. I found a couple of grammatical errors and missing words, but I'm not sure if you're interested in that level of what I call "knit-picking."

As for the story itself, it held my attention and was cute to the end, while also touching on a very sensitive subject in a very sensitive and honest way.

Good luck to you.

I don't know Willow. If I could make the gramattical errors, please let me know. Perhaps it would influence your rating. Regards, Bill

Excellent write. I so enjoyed this. So many times all people want to use racism either too lightly or are blind to it. Your grandson is very intelligent. I am glad you are close to him and he has you to talk to. Maybe someday we will look at people and only see people and not color. I think it is better than it was, but not perfect. Great job. Shirley

Hi Shirley - I sure hope you are right about people. I certainly hope so. I guess as a Southern man, I'm sensitive, because everyone assumes the worst of Southerner's and I think they are so wrong. LOL Bill

Bill, I just love reading your work. Everyone should have a friend like you because you possess that rarity--common sense. I think those free tickets stamped 'You're a racist,' have expired. It's past time people accepted responsibility for their own actions, but you know as well as I, some never will. I've no doubts Payne will grow into a very intelligent gentleman just like his grandfather, Bill.

Lola - your response is so special to me because I so admire your work and especially your ability to address sensitive issues. By the way, Payne is a hoot. He cracks me up every time I'm around him.

Your essay is well thought out and the issue deserves to be addressed. The angle of addressing the issue through the eyes of a child lightens it up and makes it more interesting. I think your thoughts are right on target. People who have been the victims of racism are more sensitive and apt to take things out of context. I like the lighter turn at the end where you address the issue of why you look at girls. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks for reading Beth and for your kind and generous feedback. I'm 61, but guilty of looking at "girls", but I'm blessed to have my best friend as my wife! Regards, Bill

gotta love kids - unadulterated and uninhibited. You make good points in your story. I like how you used a conversation between you and your grandson to expound on the greater issue. I think part of the problem is that we all acknowledge that we have certain differences, and sometimes keeping ourselves conscious of those differences (culture etc) affects our behaviour.

The other thing your story makes me think of is that people need to be careful when we cry racism.

Good one and great end to the story :-) [smart grandson]
