Many good thoughts your way. Ironically, a friend (also a teacher is going through a similar process)You mentioned three positive words, "aided", "supported" and "encouraged". Together with friends, family and faith-you have assembled a superior team.

For someone who claims to not be a poet, you have done wonderfully well expressing yourself in this poem. You show through these words a resolve and strength as you describe your near-future.

It would be easy to review this poem on an emotional basis. To do so would earn you six stars, seven stars, ALL the stars!! :-) But I think you belong to FanStory for more, and honesty is the best policy - I'm betting your first graders would be honest with you! They ALWAYS are!! :-) My suggestion, just as an aside, is that if you want to gauge how you are really doing or how people are really perceiving you, let those little kids be your guide.

Okay, we'll move on to the technical portion of our reviewing day :-) Your poem has a very natural rhythm that allows your reader to speak it aloud without struggling for pauses. The pauses in place in your poem work nicely to allow your reader time for reflection. I think the best illustration of how you feel about the coming chemo therapy is the second stanza. Those last two lines, "Robbing me of dignity, Replacing it with fatigue," seem to be some very tired and matter-of-fact statements. They are also very powerful because they speak with such simplicity to words we all can relate to in theory, but we also know that, for most of us, we haven't really lived it.

I send up prayers for you as well, and wish you all the best that God has to offer. Keep writing, keep watching with amazement the things that first graders do, and above all, remember, laughter really does have medicinal value. :-)

You write with such passion and from this I can see the inner strength within you fighting this illness. This is an inspiring piece of writing concise and most visual and most expressive in detail. This is a very good and creative write.

I wish you well for the future.

Oh, Barbara ... for you to have shared such an intimate and significant event in your life, I take my hat off to you. The writing is beautifully genuine and your fears, as well as your strong faith, shine through this entire piece. May your angles remain working overtime by your side as you receive the blessing of restored good health. Keep your faith, my dear friend.

Beautifully crafted poetry. But the author's notes also makes your words sad, poignant, heartbreaking. God bless you - I pray that the treatment will be successful and all will be well. Ron

A rough road ahead, but in the end, take heed to the last word of your poem: Victory! While the chemo is chewing up all the bad guys, and you experience changes and unpleasant side effects, you will come through it tempered and stronger.Surprisingly, despite your disclaimer, you are, indeed a poet, like it or not.!

Barbara... I hope that you don't have too much of a reaction to the treatment. Your poems shows the emotions of the fears of what is ahead of you, but just know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of all your friends and your family and though there may be tough times ahead, you will get through it and be healthy again. I am looking forward to that day, as I know you are.

The poem is very well done, but the treatment sounds very frightening. I hope and pray for the best and that you have the very minimum of all of the symptoms of this process. Why can't they come up with something that only attacks the bad cells?
Love you!
Connie
