Susan, This is a beautiful short story, it made me feel like if I was there. I wonder if you would give me permission to use it in the next issue of Little words

How beautiful is the image in the story of you and your horse running across the field alongside the deer. My daughter lives where there are deer almost daily in her backyard. She also is a horse lover and rides. She's not been riding lately, though, since she is pregnant. Thank you for sharing this lovely picture with us. ann

Hi Ann! Thank you!! She will ride again! I started right back, just days after my son was born. It did hurt, I sort of jumped the gun. But, it is a real joy. WHEN the horse is well trained! ") I am thrilled to hear from you. Say hello and best wishes to your daughter for me? Susan

Great story, the best way to be drunk is on life, no hangover. Wonderful description of the horse ride. The deer here are everywhere because bow season opened. I hate it. Great story. Anne 1204

I loved this bit of flash. As I've shared with you before, I've never been on a horse, but I certainly rode with you reading this story. Wonderfully wild. excellent

Hi Judian! Well, I do wish you could go with me once! I would love to have you to talk to, we have 3 horses, and I can only ride one , there isn't enough energy for me to work with all three. This horse, Rusty, died when a fighter jet went over, it broke the sound barrier, and Rusty flung his head up, hitting the stall door. He died instantly. That's another sharp memory, so. Thank you for this great review Jude,! I will stop by our P.O. box today! ") Susan

Hi Susan :)

Another well written piece.

You get the six because of the way you expressed the story is so few words.

The atmosphere and sense of place are excellent.

Now that's an ending -- drunk on living. The only thing I wd suggest that might improve the story and make the ending even more powerful wd be to place something in the story that was a counterpoint to the ending. This may seem awful, but perhaps the woman might be facing a serious health problem. She's taken the ride to think about her future and then this beautiful moment arose, which resulted in her becoming drunk on life for that brief moment. The piece certainly leaves the reader with a good feeling. Great work. g

Hi g! I will see about this? It's a very good idea. ") Thank you for reading this, I know flash is supposed to be fiction, but this happened to me. SOooo long ago. I wasn't afraid back then. Ha. Good to hear from you!! Susan

And what a joy - privilege
to race beside the deer -
such exhileration. Even
riding a horse would be
exciting to me, but of course,
with my spinal problem I can't
sit one as I'd be in trouble
once it started moving.

Thank you for sharing this, Susan - I loved it
and could feel the excitement.

Margaret.

hi again! Yes, this was great, but SOOOoo long ago! Wow. I would be too scared now. I have had bombs go off around me as I rode, so fear is always in the mind. Always. Just now a gun went off, I guess because they are mad that I was mowing our field. It's always something with this bunch. Thank you for this review Margaret, and I sure hope your back will be okay? I have bone spurs growing, in my neck too. SO, someday, who knows. This is caused by RA...NO fun. Please take care sweet friend. Luv, Susan

An interesting but intriguing story.
A herd of five deer must have been a pretty sight to watch. Why did your gelding take off at the sight of deer, harmless creatures?
Rusty didn't have the horse sense(?) to know it can't catch up with the swifter deer.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it as it is a story about a horse.

Oh Ramarao!! Let me explain! ") He was afraid of them, at a distance, he didn't know what they were. This happened when he was young. So the day this happened, he was looking over at them in the distance, ready to spook, so I just made him go after them! We DID catch them, we just went right in the middle of the group, and then they scattered, flagging their tails as they do. From then on, my horse was never afraid of them again. Honest, it was great. We were running right alongside two of them for over several seconds, it was magical. I wish I could describe it better. So, thank you so much, I am happy you read this! ") hugs, Susan
