Wow, what a stunningly heartfelt piece and I was very moved by the fluidity of this piece and the sad and reflective content. A beautiful story of two very happy people that met and fell in love and endured a long and wonderful relationship but unfortuately one was snatched away by the awful "c" word.
I found this a well written and superbly metered piece and the last stanza in particular the last three lines were the most poignant for me. I lost my dad to cancer 11 years ago and was in the hospital room when he took his last breath and this description you gave was it to an absolute tee.
Well done and I feel this is a formiddable entry in the contest. The very best of luck.
Cheers ...

A somewhat painful and quite poignant work. I am curious why you use commas but not periods, but the piece still flows quite well. I very much like the last line. Great visual imagery and a strong anamnestic quality.

Hi Al, thank you for your lovely comments. Also for your generous rating, my friend. Not sure why I did the commas but not the full stops, it just felt right that way. Warmest regards, Marijke

This poem, sad and sweet, is very well written. It reminded me of two things having to do with my father. My mother, and how she sounded when Dad passed, and as she came in the door, she said,"My beloved, my beloved." Also, I was holding his hand when he passed away, telling him to go and not to worry as I knew it was his time. Thank you for writing this wonderful poem of death. When one is born we know death will someday come.
Blessings,
Morning Mist

This is very beautiful and sad- I can tell that this was written in a deeply personal moment. I am sorry for your loss. "fly free, dear heart, fly free" the mist important line in the whole poem! Beautiful!
Take care

Beautiful narrative blank verse. Thank you for sharing this very personal poem. I'm not a big fan of the last line though (personally I prefer to let them fly free rather than chain their spirits here to earth to help us in our struggles), but that's just a personal preference. I know that most people like that sentiment. Great job, and good luck in the contest.

Hi, and thank you for your comments. I take it the spirit flies free, but by choice supports those who are left behind. Not chained. Thanks for your lovely and generous review, and good luck wishes. Warmest regards.

this poem is beautiful from beginning to end, the only thing we can feel, when someone is leaving our lives, the last gift that we give them, very beautiful.

Marijke, your poem has excellent iambic pentameter and does not rhyme, so it sounds like great blank verse to me, and it certainly is romantic - what a poignant farewell from one partner to another as one's life is drawing to a close after 50 years of their loving each other through thick and thin. Brooke :-)

I hope this is not biographical. If it is, I'm so sorry for your loss. This was a superb blank verse that flowed so well, and was rhythmical to the point, it felt like rhyming quatrains. Very well done. "When very soon youâ??ll no longer be here" I tripped a bit with this one line. Perhaps, "When soon you will no longer be with me" for better flow. Just the gentlest tweak

Very emotional, very touching. A very nice flow and form of the poetry, which tells the saga of days passed so quickly and time to say goodbye from this eternal world to another.
Enjoyed.
