This was a well earned winner.
You did a great job in describing
the poor little creature being abandoned.
Your picture is definitely heartbreaking.
Good luck. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so very much Mamonia for your very kind words. This was easy to write about because it's something I feel passionately about. I just pray one day that this little defenseless 4-legged sweethearts all find their way to good homes. Thank you once again. Sandy

I thought you did an excellent job with this poem and can see why it was a winner. You've captured the tragedy and sadness of this situation so well, and you've really tugged at my heartstrings.

Wow that is a very sweet poem. I felt like I just watched an ASPA advertisement. You use strong words to deeply send the message to the reader's heart.

Thank you djsignal2008 - it is SUCH a tragic epidemic everywhere it seems. I know the local SPCA's do all they can and do a great job, but the problem is so huge. The fact that so many choose to ignore these poor defenseless "4-legged babies" is heartbreaking to me. Thanks so much for reading and your kind comments. Sandy

cowering, discarded, dumped - excellent word choices to show how sorrowful this situation is - my children and I have loved quite a few rescue cats over the years - how people dump animals like garbage is beyond me, but you depict this with excellent emotional intensity. Brooke

oh thank you Brooke, whenever I receive a good review from you I am "over the top" - your work is always exceptional. It truly is a tragic situation and breaks my heart. I sometimes wonder, in these cases, just who is the human and who is the animal? Thanks again. Sandy

My daughter's newest rescue cat is a tiny kitten who was rescued by a woman off the ghetto streets of Compton, CA. A baby, left to die, in a dirty alleyway. When the woman found Pixie, she was covered in fleas, malnourished, dehydrated. And pure luck some abandoned dog hadn't mauled her. It breaks my heart. Of course, now she is living a pampered life with my daughter : -)

Oh Brooke, thanks for sharing that wonderful news! I know there are soooo many wonderful kind-hearted people out there (like your daughter) and that gives me hope. They ask for so little, and give so much. Sandy

Excellent example of a Septolet poem. You followed the guidelines well. You connected the two paragraphs cleverly by using scraps of love and garbage- I liked that!
Of course the subject is as sad as can be but we have to face this problem so we can remedy it.
You selection of adjectives was great and it painted a vivid picture. Cowering fear and pleading eyes-great!

dear Sonjalee - I am honored with the "6" rating! I loved doing the poem - for some reason the shorter forms are easier for me to try and make some kind of impact. It is definitely a subject that is near and dear to my heart so it does seem easier to write passionately about. I can't thank you enough for your very kind rating. Sandy

Hi writer,
That poor little dog really does look alienated and alone. Your words paint a very vivid and all too real picture. Well done. Best wishes. Cheers,W ^-^

Well done, sincere poem that in a few words gives the reader a sense of what is happening to these poor animals. Your lines, "Eyes plead/ for scraps of kindness." are powerful and effective in touching the heart. Best wishes, Hector

thank you so much Hector. It was one of my first real attempts at this form, and I really enjoyed it. It was easy to write about this, since it is something that is so close to my heart. I'm so glad you took the time to read and review and I appreciate it very much.

Poetry that comes from the heart (but is not drowned by over-emotionalism) is the best poetry--style is icing on the cake.

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes, at least for me, trying to stay with the strict rules of a particular form is a lot harder to do, and sometimes takes away from the impact. Thanks so much for your kind words. Sandy

How sad, the picture depicts the dejected look of the dog. Brings tears to my eyes. I cannot believe how some people treat their dogs. But it says something about them, if they are not kind to animals, what kind of person are they?
I have two dogs and they are the love of my life, I would never be without a dog as they have been my salvation in my senior years. Thank goodness there are no-kill policies in effect in some places.

I know dorts, it breaks my heart as well. It's a subject very near and dear to my heart, and perhaps that's why it's easy to write about for me. I thank you so much for your very kind words and for reading my work. I totally understand about animals being the "love of our lives" - because that's what they are and tragically so many never get to experience that love. Thanks again.

Excellent poem. I especially like the topic. You must be an animal lover like me. I have a shelter dog and he is great; my loyal buddy. Good luck in the contest.
