Backward View is a strong description of feelings and fears that come into our lives when we don't understand why. I've also had some very hard and sad things in my life. I'm older too, and one of the things I have learned that can pull me out of depression is to quit focusing on the hard things; refocus on the blessings, all the things that make you smile, and just be thankful to God for them. I'm glad you're in a happier period now. God's best to you. Marjie

It isn't depression as much a mourning. I am learning to let myself mourn. Thank you Matjie. Blessings, Barbara

I can see a lot of thought and time in this piece. Also your set of mind bleeds through as well as the emotional promotion of the piece It seems it took a great part of yourself to get these words to paper. Good write!

Not a lot of time, but thought yes. I rarely angst over a writing. It's either there or not for me. Thank you for you reading. Blessings, Barbara

Lovin' Peace, I only understand the feeling of the poem. That's okay. The second part was more straightforward and seemed to address a universal human plight which included me. The first part seemed to be about a young girl, abandoned and not given emotional feedback. When I read the second part I thought the young girl was you; but it took the second part to make me think so.
Noticed two sentences that could be read two ways:

like the teeth of a dragon
they could be waiting to devour

I understood this to mean some people may be waiting to devour this young girl LIKE the teeth of a dragon
but there is another way to read it. "They" are waiting to devour the dragon's teeth.
I interpreted it the first way first, but was aware of the second interpretation.
A very deep poem presented abstractly, which is okay by me.

Thanks for being brave enough to share the painful parts of your life. Many of us have been there.

My favorite line is "survival usurped". I take this to mean that survival occurred even when you did not want it to. Yes, survival has a way of usurping!
