I read this on the edge of my seat. There were a few things that I wanted to point out, but emotion and my ability to see words like I try to see numbers don't quite work, I just freeze up. Powerful and I enjoyed reading.

I never once took this story as being whining or disgruntled, Carol - it is beautifully told, moving, inspirational - your emotions are intense but don't overwhelm the thoughtfully chosen examples - I wish I could award a six for this strong personal memoir story. Thank you for your thoughtful review. There was so much more that I could have included, but it wasn't necessary. Someone said I lacked emotion telling it, but I think if I had used the hurt, tears, etc. it would have clouded the actually lesson I was trying to get across. Thanks again for the kind words. Carol

You show great wisdom here BeginAgain as you process the pain you endured emotionally, but how you can see that your father meant it for good and strength.

He was from a different country and a different era, but what he taught you did indeed give you the strength to face challenges others would have found crippling. You didn't sit down and say "enough! I can't go on" you just kept putting that one foot in front of the other to walk through life.

There are many today who could learn something from that attitude!

I only hope that I have taught my children that they too must continue to try but "trying" is the key and they should not consider themselves a failure if they do not always succeed. Not every one is meant to be the straight A student ..metaphorically speaking.
