Interesting. I like the idea of a health reform, I'm just not sure I agree with how they are trying to do it. Of course it seems that all we hear about are bits and pieces, it's hard to see the whole picture. I hope they do figure something out though.

Nice job on the poem, isn't it funny how doctors won't uphold their hypocratic oath when money is in question?

I and my kids went to the same family practice in a nice suburb for over twenty years and spent loads of money there over the years as my job did not offer insurance. When I lost my job I went to them once and asked to be treated without payment, and they turned me away as if I were a beggar off the streets who had never been there before. So yes, I agree with your question!! Thanks so much. Brooke :-)

This is a riot and so true. It's great how you have captured one of greatest contempery issues and turned it into a humorous limerick. It's also, a sad comentary on the state that health care is in today. Great Limerick.

Great limerick, Brooke...were the situation you describe not so sadly true, I could laugh easier at it! Still, I chuckled.

I really like your idea of a satiric limerick series...Gallows humor with a jolly beat is so wickedly amusing! :>)

I've always been partial to gallows humor - and as one without insurance, this topic is near and dear to me :-) Thanks. Brooke

Brooke... Oh, so well done. Do ye have a bit of the Irish in yah. What fun verse to write. As fine a limerick as I've had occasion to hear. Well, since the last one you posted.

There was a young lass named Brooke,
who at limericks decided to look.
She wondered were she that witty,
to try her gift at a ditty,
now proven we may even see a book.

Or something like that. You are so gifted. More. More.

I don't think there's any Irish in me, but I love Irish writers and culture if that counts!! Thanks, Brooke :-)

A timely and spot on limerick.

Loved the bite of it.

I do not understand how/why big business medical care is willing to kill people to make a dollar or, more accurately to make a few extra dollars.

What kind of self-involved people are we that we let this go on and on?

This is as mystifying to me as was the whole lack of civil rights in this country. I was alive and conscious as the nation took to the streets on the black/white issue...is it going to take a revolution to get health care? If your house burns down..the fire department comes...if some one sends you a mail...the post office delivers it..if a crook comes to rob...the police come...but if you are sick? then you are supposed to handle it all by yourself....it boggles the mind.

Excellent! Kennedy would approve! Very clever and funny but so true. Why don't these idiots see this! We need govt. Health care program. My son, who's a small business owner, pays a fortune for insurance for his young family! But he has to have it! I don't understand the opposition.
Keep it going, I love 'em!

Thanks, Deb - yes, I have no insurance and found a great free clinic for regular kind of office visits - volunteer docs and nurses, but they can only do so much. MANY of the people at this suburban clinic are not the sterotypically indigent - they are people like the self-employed and those whose work doesn't provide insurance, who can't afford doctor visits in addition to food and shelter. My son in law has a full time job but with no insurance, and he had to pay $250 for two doctor visits to clear up an ear infection. Lots and lots of people who work don't have a spare $250 on top of their basic bills - and this was for a rather simple problem. Brooke

I guess people who have always had insurance dont understand. Last year my grand-daughter had a brain tumor, (turned out fine!) if they hadnt paid for BCBS, they'd be living with me today. Still her monthly heck ups (with insurance) cost them thousands of dollars. Some people cant see beyond their own small lives. And dont want to know!

precisely - people who've always enjoyed access don't understand what it is like on the other side of that fence that blocks access to many - they only worry that changes will make them wait longer for care, etc if they have to share the system with an influx of new people.

reveiewer laughs sourly. You know how I feel about this, but since I'm at work and you dont want to read a book, I will simply compliment the brilliance of your darkly witty limerick and move on. Its fantastic, if we dont get healthcare than Iraq had more compassionate government than ours sigh

Hi Brooke,
I have seen this happen once in a doctor's office. I wanted to scream at the receptionist for not taking Medicare! The man couldn't get help for his pain. Anwyway, I like this poem. Its rhyme is perfect.

I went, along with my children, to a family practice for over twenty years and paid their exorbitant prices since my job did not offer insurance. Then I lost the job and could not afford their prices - the one time I went to them and asked if they could treat me without payment, they told me they did not take charity cases. I wasn't even a stranger off the streets. Damn them. I've now found the most wonderful free clinic with volunteer docs and nurses, but they can't take up the slack for everyone for every need. Thanks, Brooke :-)

that's awful! I'm glad you found a good clinic. I hope things improve soon. I don't think there is an easy answer.
