Wow, Beth. Those are some tip-of-the-iceberg-only information feeders you have there. The whole engine for class story is enough to cause one to carry a ball bat around to encourage upfront negotiations.

Don't tell me mine are the only family members that don't give you the whole story. I'll be there are a lot of people who see the value of saying no. My son told me just last night, when his wife and kids ask anything the first word out of he mouth is "No". Of course, he blamed it on me teaching him to be negative.

Beth,
I found your way of how to Negotiate the Negative. I say in clever way of how you knew how to wangle your son to keep on the subject about getting the car where it would run.

Lol, Beth! I can't imagine anyone calling you a negative person. A very wise poem--press the pause button before saying yes or no to a request in order to consider all of the consequences. I loved this post--a glimpse into life when you had kids at home.

Thank you Tim. I may be a bit negative, because my kids called me a burster of bubbles and a dream killer. Now they are out of my house, I'm feeling a bit more optimistic. LOL

I love it, Beth, and I can so sympathise. Although I've never had a son, I can so sympathise with this. It also brought a smile on my face, if you don't mind me saying so. Ulla:)))

Thank you Ulla. I glad you got a smile out of my attempt at humor which I found less that funny at the time.

I love it! I can certainly sympathize with you. While our sons were very content with the used cars we bought them, eventually, they spent a great deal of time (and their own money) keeping them running. Made them appreciate things more, I think. You certainly told your woes in a humous way that I enjoyed.

Yes, Beth, my dear, it sounds like you have been played more than a few times, as have I. Now they call me negative too. I used to wonder why old people were so negative, but now that I'm one of them, I've figured it all out. Because, they have heard and seen it all, and know darn well that there is more to the story than what's being told. Sorry, about the rambling, but you hit a sour spot. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ric, I'm glad you can identify with me. The good thing about being older, people expect you to be grouchy so you can get away with it. I'm glad you got a laugh.

This sounds like home. I swear I am the only one who thinks through every situation. My oldest daughter was born with common sense but the rest of the family ... not so much. Yes, I remember the story about the car. Well done, Beth. I admit I am negative and I take a lot of convincing. LOL Good job. Nancy:)

Thank you Nancy, I'm glad you got a chuckle out of my attempt at humor; which I didn't find so funny back in the day.

Enough is enough, I could relate this story to other tales you already posted, it is quite natural, living experience in difficulties, in rearing up the children and keep the family to go and keeping your occupation and satisfying everyone and your husband, your tendency to say no is natural; well said, well done; post god speed more; positively encouraging editing, negatively not wording, forgiving errors of theist-good authors-writers. I remember these stories! And no, you're not negative at all, just reasonable, rational, and very persevering! I liked your musing about what an archaeologist might wonder about that engine!

If your husbands asks, (husband)
It's sort of like the bills that pass through congress. (Congress) So funny!

Dynamite details. I was ready to punch your son out for the stress he caused you and himself. Great humor with the tombstone reference. You also give two other great examples of family members leaving out details.
