"...what better book to choose than my lifetime favorite."

And not a better choice could you have made.

The descriptions of the tale were fascinating and did indeed pique my interest. Your firm grasp on a wide and varied vocabulary has served you well in your poetry and has here as well.

Excellent.

And good luck in the contest.

Very interesting read! I do find that very inspiring, I have precious little time to indulge in being creative, so this gives me some hope. I'm also intrigued by the book as well. Thanks for sharing, and best of luck :)

Hi Brooke, this is an informed and inspiring report which both meets the brief and makes no secret of your admiration for Faulkner and. in particular, his talent for characterisation. Not critical, but you have narrowed your audience to site members in your first sentence. If this was a real, published report, there would be no such 'qualification'. Just an observation, for what it's worth. Tom

Oh, it's part of a contest designed to get people to run out and get the book, so I assumed site members as the audience. I know I would not narrow my audience in most reports! :-)They even call it a book report and not a formal literary analysis. Thanks for your positive review :-)

This was a great book report and it sounds like it is a wonderful book to read. It was well described and easy to understand. Thanks, Jeanette

This is an awesome book, and you definately nailed it with your review...If I didn't already have the book in my collection (I collect more books than I read) I would absolutely find it just by your recommendation...Well done and good luck in the contest...Debra

I've read "As I Lay Dying" many times; Faulkner is one of my favorites too. The Southern Gothic tale marks as the penacle of any child/wannabe writer born in the South. Anyway, didn't make me want to run out and buy it, as I already have it, but did make me want to read again. So I guess you did your job. Good Luck in the contest.

I'm so glad you like him - some Brit just told me she hadn't even heard of him, and I nearly died!!!!! enjoy the reread, and thanks for your review! :-)

What?!? Brits, they're getting just as bad as the French.

Wow! Great insight into one of my all time favorite books! Yes, your review does inspire me! Now I'll have to get the book out of the library, since I no longer remember the closing line! Thanks for writing this tribute to Faulkner! Gerry

Oh, yeah, this book is worth multiple reads - don't peak at the final line until you read it through again! :-) Thank you for a great review

You're so HARD! LOL If you only knew the size of the stack next to my bed! (That's just the pile I'm reading for pleasure, not to use in preparing a class or researching a book!) But, maybe, I'll be good! Gerry

Brooke - I have never been much of a fan of Faulkner's writings but I have to admit that your book report has made me interested in this book. Excellent piece you wrote. Charlie.

I adore Faulkner - I worship Faulkner - I'd give an arm to write 10% as well as Faulkner. His longer stuff can be offputting to some, I know, but read this and the short things like The River and The Bear and Spotted Ponies -those three are often published together. If you have a funny bone at all, these shorter works are all way into black/gallows/dark humor :-) oh, and thanks!!!

Your essay really provoked my interest in this book, and the characters on it. I like stories of survival, in the physical as well as in the spiritual way. (I'll borrow it from the friendly library).

Yes, your library is sure to have it and it is about survival of both sorts. Thanks for the review!

I must admit I have never heard of either book or author; then again, I am from the UK and our knowledge of literature is generally drawn from wrfiters such as Shakespeare, HG Wells or the guys who write the Dan Dare and Superman escapades.
A lovely in-depth writing on your favourite book, written with so much feeling I will not rest until I have purchased a copy.
Once again, no spag content.
Best wishes
Lawrie

I love Shakespeare and HG Wells and Dickens and the English romantic poets and T.S. Eliot and a bunch of other English authors - but they don't do Faulkner in England?? That is disturbing. He is magnificent. You really need to give him a try!! Get thee to a book store!! LOL Thanks for the review :-)

    No we don't.
I must admit the Eng Lit teachers and profs tend to stick with Shakespeare, Dickens, Hemingway, Eliot and Poe.
When I was at school, in the days of wooden benches and strict teachers, with cane in hand, I thought Shakespeare and Dickens were the only people who wrote anything!!!!!
As soon as I can, I will pop into my local Waterstones. They hold more books than any library I've ever visited.
    Best wishes
    Lawrie
