Mrs. KT, this is a beautiful well rounded story. I grew up in Wisconsin and also know Michigan. You brought a lot of memories back. Your story has a rich strong texture. I love how you describe the perfect Christmas tree...the one still with a bird nest. Like your Dad, my Dad made sure I had books and in my 20's managed to get me hooked on Ray Bradbury and science fiction. It sounds like your Dad made you aware of the world around you. The detail of slipping a semi-cold beer in give your story a wry verity. Whatever you do, keep writing! Nigai

Alas, Mrs. KT, that FanStory has failed to create a system permitting reviewers to assign one annual seven star review. Currently permitted to award only five stars for "Better Than Any Train Ride," I find it embarassing to "grade" a story of the finest cloth with a #5 crayon. As I consider this remarkable, and remarkably written story, images of proud parents in a celestial garden grace my thoughts. Mr. Kenel seems to be saying: Atta girl, Diner. Atta girl.
Poet hugs, Mrs. KT.

Ah Dante! Life has been so crazy these past few weeks....but I surely am pleased that you enjoyed my offering; I was hoping that you would spot it and take a peek. It's been a long time since I have seen the name "Mr. Kenel" in print....damn....he was an amazing man...I would like to think he is proud of his daughter; I do think this offering would have made him smile. Keep in touch! diane

Great story. You told it well, too. Very clear, walk down memory lane with powerful emotion. Good choice of vocabulary. Well done.

This is a wonderful story, Diane. The ending brought tears to my eyes. You were so fortunate to have a terrific grandfather, and you wrote about him with great feeling. You are a Writer!

Dear Sally! You may not believe this, but you are the first person to have ever said to me, "You are a writer!" I am most honored and humbly accept your generous compliment. diane

You are simply wonderful, KT. This is the best of the best and what memories they are of a girl and a father who knew what it should be to guide a little girl and give her a lovely future. Wouldn't it be lovely for every one of us to have had that kind of childhood that would give us safety in our futures?
I must read what ever you have written and I'll look you up now on Fan Story.

No, Dorothy, you are simply wonderful! You sound like someone who has lived a very full and complete life. Not only am I grateful for having had such a wonderful father, but I am also fortunate to have been married these past 29 years to a man very much like my father! I must have done something good in my life! Thank you for your kind review and for requesting to be a fan! I hope I don't disappoint! diane

Thanks for sharing this lovely story. Sometimes there is
no need for intelligent conversation or even a single word...
just a smile, a look or a loving touch says it all!
Not a single SPAG noted....which is what I would expect from an English teacher. One of my sons is an English teacher in Florida. The greatest reward I received was when he read my
book and said " Mum, I started out reading it as a teacher would, but suddenly realized I was reading it as a reader!"

Hi Mrs. KT,
What a lovely story. It seems that a lot of women hold great memories of their fathers. Maybe moreso than males. Taking that train ride with him certainly would have been a wonderful experience.
I remember my father, and how he used to sing 'The Preacher and the Bear,' with dialect. We begged him every evening to sing that song for us.
Memories like that is what keeps us going. Good job.
The story is well written, with no spag.

Lovely memoir. How wonderful to have a loving companionable father. I read each word greedily, feeling with you the great pleasure of your lives together.
It's as close to poetry a many a work of prose I've read.
Thank you

A very lovely story! So sad for your loss, but it is wonderful that you have so many memries with your father. Written so smoothly and easy to read.I enjoyed it alot. I see no need for any corrections.
