This literary ride, I think, was much better than that I was expecting from the title.
The way you began the story created a kind of definite impact on me and I was pulled by the following lines to go up to the last one.
It is a very interesting write , my friend.
Bless you
Rajasir

when northern Michigan's winter winds had shown no mercy. This is a great line.

This is a lovely story and your writing is a pleasure to read.

This is a beautifully written tribute to a wonderful father. I first wondered if it could have been a brother- but as I read on, I realized that the patience this man had, and the deep love had to be that of a parent. You write this so well and the love you have for him shines through in this piece.

This was a good read for me. It flowed well, and there were no spaggies spotted.
Maybe you can take that train ride by yourself or with your child if you have any. Would be interesting to tell him/her about how you planned it with your dad

That is a superb, emotional, heart-wrenching piece (take that from a Dad) - you bring back all the memories of my little girl and I *who is now in University) and explain why the things that stand out in this life always seem to revert back to friends and family

Thank you for writing a great piece

Michael

And now I now what you mean in that review

Many thanks

Michael

Mrs. Kt
This is a very poignant story and great tribute to your father.
It was told beautifully and my eyes teared up just reading it. It
made me think of my own father and miss him. He's been dead
for 29 years.

Dear Mrs. KT: This is a lovely personal narrative and really brings to life for the reader similar reminiscences; enough to bring a tear to the eye, I daresay.

I only have a couple of nits, though because of the overall quality of the piece, I'm not docking points :)

1) "Together we fished for bullheads and sunfishes on Sanford Lake and the Shiawassee Flats, built and painted a five foot tall, one hundred twenty foot long post and rail fence that is still standing and serviceable today, nearly fifty years later, and searched every December of my childhood until we found the "perfect" Christmas tree - the one that still housed a robin's nest and whose crooked branches had obviously offered protection to God's small creatures when northern Michigan's winter winds had shown no mercy."

>>very long sentence, gets a little difficult to keep track of all the thoughts here. Perhaps use semi-colons?

2) Overuse of quotes: not speaking of the dialogues, just a number of instances where a word or phrase is in quotes; I understand why you have them, it just gets a little distracting when they're are too many.

Overall, a fantastic piece. I love your work, since you write of things I think about all the time - my childhood, nostalgia, wonderful memories. I think we are all blessed with a greater awareness of, and appreciation for, our memories because of your fine ability to bring your own to life.
Well done!

Hello! Oh....I love to experiment with unconventional groupings, sentence structures, etc. That said, I also love to write hoping that the reader will read the work aloud. I know conventional wisdom says to do otherwise, but hey, e.e. cummings needs a friend in his corner! Take Care....diane

An awesome man and story! I feel as though I know your father and you. You did an excellent job. It was as if I was there with you both the whole time!

I had a father like that and I miss him too. God Bless

The story is more a beautiful eulogy and worthy of publishing by any family periodical. The emotion it rises to is all too often disguised by readers with no memorable past that has basis in a loving father or mother. Though beautifully done, the piece will not be appreciated by a world of cold and selfish reality. Too bad.

Ah Friend! So much appreciation for your kind review. I am deeply honored and humbled. My grandfather, Anton Kenel, emigrated from Lucerne, Switzerland in 1912 - I read your biography and thought you might enjoy that piece of information. From what I understand, "kenels" were like Spanish sherpas. Quite a few Kenels were burned at the stake for relgious purposes during the Middle Ages. . . Again, I thank you for appreciating my work. Do stop by again. . . diane
