As a smoker of long ago I hate smoking, Dolly. It's bad for everything that likes to live. The smell stays with you, it clings to your breath, your clothes, your lungs. But the freedom of choice is everyone, right or wrong.

This was a great poem. I hate cigarettes, as well, but this law sounds like overkill. I think you were right in your author's notes - it's ridiculous. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

As (unfortunately) a smoker, I do not believe the government is committed to stopping the young ones from smoking, we all know it concerns money,
though if they halved the cost of cigarettes to those of us who are truly addicted, (been smoking for 50 years and more) and doubled the cost for those who have not yet started or started just a few years ago (age for cost) for the young one's this would be a deterrent, I could go on but will refrain, very well written****kahpot

Thank you for your honesty here, my Grandmother smoked all her life, she lived until she was 85 years old, she was lucky. Back then everybody smoked, including my Father. The doctor would recommend those with stress to smoke to reduce their stress levels. How times have changed. I appreciate your review, love Dolly x

It seems a bit extreme and things that are banned generally take on a life of their own. And who is going to police this? The already ovrworked police? Education is the key, and it has to be made "uncool" to smoke cigarettes or participate in vaping. Perhaps provision of free health care (as we have over here) should be conditional upon being drug-free. The health system is overworked trying to heal people who have chosen these addictive practices. Perhaps they need to go to the bottom of the waiting list to receive treatment, in order to realise that their illness is a consequence of their choice. (That would be probably even more difficult to enforce!) Well said.

Thank you for your kind review Wendy, much appreciated, there is no Policing of this new law except perhaps if anyone tells the Police that shop keepers are selling to anyone born after 2009. This will be impossible when people are over 40! Are they going to ask a 40 year old to produce his birth certificate? It is totally ridiculous Wendy, They have not thought it out at all. They should refuse to treat anyone who is ill because of smoking unless they agree to give up the habit. Love Dolly x

"Cigarette Ban" I so support it, as those things are horrible to the nose and body.
Good reading flow and nice rhymes.
"We need to educate the population," But sometimes the darn population doesn't wanna be educated, or just doesn't care. Then that's when to stick the hard bot of law up their... My point is, I agree with the message of your well-penned sonnet here.

Dolly, this is a very good poem. I feel exactly as you do. I don't like cigarettes, but I agree they shouldn't take the right to choose if you want to buy them or not. If they get a way with that, they will try to take away other rights. The world is a messed up place. Great job on this. Love, Brenda

I think a ban is preposterous. You make something illegal and people will find a way to get it. I'm with you. Educate. Get those who have cancer or have survived it, come to schools. Sometimes seeing the effects of something is much more educational than just saying it's bad for you. Like you sad, it's everyone's right to make their own choice ... even the bad ones. Gretvhen

Thank you Gretchen for your review, glad you agree with this poem, we all make bad choices, we eat bad food, drink alcohol, sometimes smoke and are lazy, it is not up to Governments to curtail our activity, love Dolly x

I really don't see how this law can be policed, cigarettes will just find there way onto the Black Market, and what's to stop people from buying cigarettes abroad? I don't smoke and I never will but I think this does make us seem like a Nanny state. New Zealand pretty much abandoned this law as soon as they implemented it. I wonder if the Labour party will get rid of it if they win the election this year, and I'm pretty sure they will win it. An excellent piece Dolly.

You are so right here Jacob, this law is futile, I appreciate your review, I fear the labour party will win the election and then trouble will begin, love Dolly x

That's a tough one, Christine. It's illegal to take hard drugs, and cigarettes probably kill more people than the drugs do. I do think that not enough is done through education.

We humans suffer with drugs, cigarettes and alcohol and also eating too much sugar and fast food, being overweight and not getting enough exercise, it is not down to the Government to ban food or cigarettes, we just need to educate people and encourage people onto the right path, I appreciate your review Paul, love Christine x

I agree completely, Dolly. As much as I dislike smoking for the same reasons you stated so well in your poem, what I dislike even more is the government's self-appointed responsibility to protect us from our own bad decisions. That is not why man created the idea of government. It was to enforce our rights, not to take them away.

In free countries, it used to be (and still should be) that government required the consent of the governed, but now that's no longer the case as they have continued to abuse that requirement and have flipped it around. Now it's people require the consent of the government. We are the fools for allowing it to happen.

I loved your review Jim, your opinion is absolutely spot on! This law is ridiculous and as much as I love a Conservative Government, Richie Sunak is making himself a laughing stock! I fear his days are numbered and we will be putting up with a Labour Government next time around. Love Dolly x
