Hi Debbie,
This is a thorough life story of Maa Angelou. She was a strong woman and she should inspire all of us to be stronger and remind us we can overcome hard beginnings. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' was a good book. She was a wonderful performance poetry reader.
Congrats on the second place finish in the reviewing contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Have a wonderful weekend
Joan

Thank you so much, Joan, for such a kind and supportive review! I rather fell in love with this lady. (Where does all that spirit come from and go to?) I'm also grateful for your thoughtful congrats. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Debbie

Hi Debbie,
I read this one a couple of weeks back? I tried hard to get back to review it before this, but life happens and distractions become commonplace.

One thing I can say from what I have read, from not only this fine piece of writing, is that you are definitely gifted.

I guess with this story within a poem, I was transfixed, as I love anything Maya Angelou... and I found myself reading it a few times as I enjoyed it that much. Also enjoyed the video attached. What an amazing woman and human being!

Beautiful rhymes, wonderful composition and masterful construction... a true pleasure to read Debbie.

With our thoughts we create...
the shaping of form.

Kindest regards,
James.

We are educated on the history and plight of all the marginalized races. My personal hero is Dr. King because his dream was for simple and true equality, not to separate or divide and conquer, but a complete melding of our communities into one community. Not necessarily homogenous, but together, in love with mankind. At least that's how I see him.

Another stunning poem full of effort, information, and admiration. I am a fan of Maya Angelou and this poem is a beautiful tribute to her strength and beauty as well as her creativity. Your author notes are meticulous and add so much. Wonderful effort!

-A wonderful image and nice presentation, Debbie.
-Your notes are appreciated, too.
-I taped the inauguration when Maya Angelou shared her poem
and used it in my classroom for inspiration.
-I read that she got a room in Washington and stayed there
to avoid distractions in trying to write this poem. She felt
the pressure of writing something for her country.
-You did a great job with your poem and capture
her early beginnings when she wouldn't speak.
-As you described in your poem, she was helped
by an English teacher, and what a wonderful thing that was.
-I like your verse about the black ocean and the final
two verses that highlight what made Maya Angelou who she was:
"A whirlwind of majestic might, unbroken, ever strong,
she soared in joy and honesty, then shared her heart in song."
-You did a great job and should be proud of this poem.

You are very welcome and deserving of the review, Debbie. I used to watch Oprah, and Maya Angelou was probably on there, too. She was an incredible woman.

This is a beautifully constructed biographical poem about Dr Maya Angelou who was, as you say, a most remarkable woman. Such a wonderful life born out of adversity. A most interesting read.

Wow! You've outdone yourself. It's as if Maya's feisty spirit had inspired you.
I can't begin to imagine how terrible it must be to be abused as a young child although, unfortunately, it's more common than we think (it happened to the son of one of my friends)
Thanks so much for sharing. I always learn (in this case remember) a lot through your poems and notes.

An amazing story of an amazing women told beautifully in your poem. She has long been one of my favorite poets and people. Thank you for sharing her story and for the notes that make it clear what she has endured and yet like her, we can sing, "I rise."

Blessings
Janet

How well I know this story and the woman who triumphs despite her traumatic youth. And while she 'rises again', she inspires so many others to do the same!
Need I even say it? This is brilliant, my friend -- poem AND notes.
