You are so right Debi - those were the good ole days. I enjoyed reading your recollections of your school days.
Not political or worried about school shootings. A simpler time to be young. Today children loose their innocence way too early.

Well done.
Blessings
Janet

Thanks so much for reading and your review for my country school story, Janet.

I love hearing all the recounts of the different schools that everyone went to and the differences and similarities.

I couldn't agree more about how fast children lost their innocence. But the rest of the people's stories have been fun to read. Thanks again, dear friend. Love, Debi

Hello, Debi,

I understand what you mean. I remember playing outside a big part of the day and I was only five at first. I remember visiting a friend at her house where we spent all day. My parents look everywhere for me and were really scare but I was alright. So I was only allowed to play near my home.

We also moved a lot, something I continued to do as an adult, thus the name Gypsy, among other things

Now I keep an eye at all times when I take Atticus to the park. There are some monsters walking around free to snatch and kidnapp kids... it's a nightmare.

You described the differences of our childhood and now, well done.

Love,

Marival

Thanks so much for reading and your review for my country school story, Marival. I love hearing all the recounts of the different schools that everyone went to and the differences and similarities.

I am not surprised that you have to watch Atticus that close, as I always did when I cared for my grandkid too. But with my kids, things were still pretty relaxed. Yet, I never let my kids out of my sight until they were old enough to date. LOL. Just kidding.

I can see why your mom would worry about you at five. When my brothers took me I was maybe eight, but I do believe they always had her permission to leave the yard.

Thanks again, my very dear friend. Love, Debi

Well Debi, thank you so very much for taking us on a magic carpet ride. Once again you have taken a somewhat mundane subject and spurred us on to recapture the days and the feelings of our youth. Although my experience was not a mirror image there certainly were parallel consistencies that transformed us both. Thanks so much for enriching our lives today.

Dan, you are so very good for my ego, and a sweetheart to boot! Thank you for the kind words for this one too. Wow, you almost leave me speechless, as you are so kind. The fact that you can relate to this at all makes me so happy you are back and we are talking again. Seems like old times. OMGosh, it truly does seem like I have known you that long. Thanks again for more of your generous stars. And thank you for being you. Love, Debi

It's great to be back sis I paid for a year so I guess I will be around for that long and maybe much longer lol it is good to talk to you and I have connected with our sister p.m. Help me out with something that I am not at all clear on. My birthday is October 25, 1954. I think you guys have the same day but I don't think it's the 25th am I right?
reply by the author on 27-Mar-2024
No, we are both the 19th, so you are younger by six days.
Yet it was all in 1954 so we just called us the triplets. LOL

This is an appealing non-fiction post. The photo reminds me of the smallest pioneer-era schools in southern Utah, or maybe up north in Lagoon Amusement Park's Pioneer Village. I thought you did a good job including several things about school back then that were just 'normal' life, but that would seem unexpected today.
Little suggestion:
Yet, we seldom had any supervision.
I think you can take the comma out after Yet.

Crystie, I thank you for not only the awesome review and comments, but for the feedback. Thanks for catching my typo, and I will go remove the comma right now. Gosh, I appreciate it! Thanks again, sweetie!! Love, Debi

Yes! Those were the good ole days! I was born in '66, so I can relate to a lot of this too. I came from a small school, and we said "the pledge" and sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee."" We cleaned the chalkboards, and I never remember anyone supervising any of us at recess. In elementary school we were allowed to walk off campus and go to this bar and buy burgers and fries. Then we would hit up the candy store afterwards. That would never be a thing nowadays! Oh, the memories!
I love your story!

Hi Jodi, yes, your school sounded like ours and then when we got to seventh grade, we too could walk up town, eat, go to groc store. We were even allowed to smoke across the street from the high school. Which seems really weird now.
Thanks for the kind comments for this story, Jodi. Have a wonderful Easter, my dear friend. Love, Debi

HI Debbie,
I think I remember saying the Pledge of allegiance until about third grade. Then it stopped. Sometimes on the 4th of July weekend our church sings "My Country Tis of Thee" as the closing hymn. I can't imagine a teacher not complaining at have such a large class and being able to teach more than one grade at a time or teachers not coming out during recess.
Nicely told story.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Have a great day.
Joan

Hi Joan! I don't think that the teachers really knew the difference as far as complaining about having to teach that many grades. After all they had been doing that for generations. I know my mom was just happy to have a job. Y'know??

It is nice to reminisce with you, although I didn't attend a one-room school. But we said the pledge to the flag and sang patriotic songs and prayed the Lord's Prayer each day. It was also good to feel safe and secure at school or in the neighborhood. Thanks for sharing. Carol

'Those were the good old days'. I still say that quote or 'old school'. I remember we only had one teacher for the whole one-room classroom. They were excellent at reading and writing. Like your story. The old school days are easy to reminisce with school chums.

They were the good ole days weren't they! But I think life was probably as political then as it is now. It's just that we were switched off to it all in gloriously ignorant bliss or had this trust that we were being looked after by trustworthy individuals and authorities. A lovely, nostalgic trip down Memory Lane! Thanks for sharing, Debi. Debbie

You know, Debbie. You are right about the political stuff. I don't know about you, but us kids feared the nuclear bomb. We feared Russia and that was a lot to handle for kids. I never thought of that until right now. Yuck. That just crashed my old country school party!! LOL...

But seriously, I never thought about that once when I was writing the story. But it was there. I think we would listen to our parents talk when they didn't know we were listening.

Anyway thank you for the wonderful review and words for my story.
    Love, Debi
