That is quite the adventure you had. I'm so glad you didn't get murdered. This western tale of adventure, travel, family, danger and excitement was a good read. Thanks for sharing the story of your vacation.

This piece brings back so many memories. Can't even imagine what went through your heads while you were locked into the back of that camper. I was thinking, not a good idea but it all worked out and you lived to tell about it. I think it smacks of a western, gunslinger and all. No horses but maybe banditos. Good luck with the contest.

Thank you Jeano. I really appreciate your review. We felt totally helpless locked into that camper. We had no idea why those guys came back but I have to think they saw we were from out of town and assumed we might be easy targets to rob.

You're welcome.

It's a gripping tale oscillating between family arguments and danger lurking on the outside and some wonderful commentary along the way - travel really does broaden the mind, as they say, giving us a chance to reflect.

You always come up with someone that either takes me back in a memorable time or get me tickled with something that hits home. I used to take the northern route to California, a three day and night trip. Then, I decided for change to take the southern route through Texas, the ugliest, flat, dusty, and longest trek I've ever been on. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

LOL Yes, I would never take that route to again. It is was horrible. I thought maybe something interesting had developed through there since we were there but maybr not. I appreciate the review.

Your trip took you places where it was a little nerve-wrenching and finger-biting. I'm glad you made your way to safer surroundings even though you wanted some Western adventure.

Thank you Rosemary. I wouldn't have be so anxious to go if I'd know what would happen but since it turned out okay, I'm glad I did.

If you drove through those particular states it would have been similar to driving through certain parts of Australia, I've read this before, the highlight being the loud car and the pony tails, we have camped out in our caravan in such places. Beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy

I do understand how traveling with kids can be interesting. We never tried it in a pickup. Traveling with four boys is a lot of fun, NOT!! Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us and I wish you luck.

Thank you Barbara. Traveling with one boy and three girls isn't fun either. Of course, when we made that trip we only had one boy ane two girls but that one hyperactive little boy almost drove us crazy

As far as I am concerned, this is worthy of the top prize. It kept me engrossed throughout. So glad no one in your family was injured. The part about the strangers reminded me aq bit of the short story "Encounter In Illinois" which was made into the movie "Hot Rods From Hell." My dre4m was always to go out west but lack of funds and a young child prevented it. all we did was go further east, north, or south.

Thank you Jim. I enjoy your reviews. You are always so positive and encouraging with my work. I've been West a several times since that trip. The only states I've missed are South Decota, Oregan, Minnasoda, and I'd not sure about Indiana.

When my wife was here, my dream was to go to Wyoming, see Yellowstone Park, and ride horses and see ghost towns. Now, just to ride a horse would be a huge accomplishment.

This is so typical, Beth. And you did it in a time when you couldn't Google state parks and use navigation to get you to where you were going. Ah, the good old days were not always good, lol!
My husband and I once took a tent and camping equipment and headed north from Florida to Indiana. Our plan was to camp every night going up and coming back, but it rained every single night - hard - and we stayed in motels every single night. It was an expensive vacation.
Thanks for sharing, and good luck with the contest.

Thank you, Pam. We always hoped for an inexpensive vacation but that seldom worked out. I appreciate the review and comments.

Indeed, the Grapes of Wrath travelers come to mind. I had forgotten their family name. I thought this writing to be well done, and enjoyed it despite it being longer than my personality is comforted by.

Thank you Tom. I apologize for it be long but FanStory suggested 5000 words. It was less than 3000 so it could have been worse, which means you would have skipped it.

Wow. I thought my writing 2000 words was too much, but I was desperate to post something this year and that was weeks ago.
