I log on to Fanstory occasionally just to review a few poems and yours was the first and only one that really got my attention. I've read many of your beautiful poems throughout the years, but this one is certainly the best. Please, with your permission, there was only one word that sounded out of place to me and that's, "motored." A word that came to mind was "ventured."
Your words paint a picture that I have personnally witnessed many, many times over a lifetime spent here on my farm in the rolling hills and valleys in northern Kentucky. I see herds of deer, as many as 15 or 20, pass through my fields all during the year. My wife took a picture of a "white" 10 point buck recently and those who see the picture simply cannot believe it.
The way that you describe your experience with this majestic animal, your rhyming, your excitement and especially the picture that you used are all just perfect. I could read poems such as this one all day and never get bored. In my 15 years at Fanstory I have read thousnds and thousands of poems and I truly believe that none ever got my attention the way yours did.
If I could vote for it as "poem of the month," I would. If I could vote for you to win the contest I definitely would, but in my opinion, you already have won. You struck a nerve in me with your exciting wilderness tale and I don't believe that has ever happened in all the years of my poetry reading.
If it doesn't win, that will make me very sad and if it doesn't win that will tell me that all the voters live in the city and have never experienced the thrilling moments that God and His creations provide for us all.
I wish you the very best of luck in the contest. To me, this is the winner no matter what happens. Take care of yourself Janet...Your old friend...Bill

Wow Bill, I hardly know what to say. This is by far the best review I have ever received. I am beyond happy that you checked into FanStory today and decided to read my poem.
I recently read a book written by an author from my home town. She talked about her sightings of wild animals and that reminded me of my story. Thus, the inspiration for my poem. There is a large deer population in northwestern Pennsylvania. Many doe fed in the cornfields near my home and ate apples and pears in my yard. The buck were more elusive and a special treat to see.
When the children were young, we used to travel to Alaska. Again, her book brought back so many memories of incidents in the wilderness there. Once I was taking picture of a hugh brown bear out the car window. I had to keep adjusting the lens to keep him in focus, not realizing how close he was getting to the car until the kids started screaming. I stopped and rolled up the window, almost on his nose. When we talk about it today, the kids (now in their 50s) say, Oh, you mean the time you almost got us eaten by a brown bear. Maybe that will be a future poem.
I like your idea of "ventured" rather than "motored". It keeps the poem focused on the adventure.
You definitely made my day Bill and thank you for the stars and good wishes. My husband has been struggling with health issues of late so I don't write or post very often but I'm so pleased that I wrote this one. Your review has given me a treasured lift that I dearly needed today.

Thank you Janet for all your kind words and well wishes, I truly appreciate it. Using your words in your reply, your reply also gave me a "tresured lift" that I needed very much also. I have suffered with MS for 32 years now making it very difficult to write the way I did when I first joined Fanstory,
I was so sorry to hear about your husbands health issues, I will mention him in my prayers. I pray that it is nothing serious.
Keep writing Janet, I discovered over the years that it is a great stress reliever and it makes us use our minds as we grow older, possibly, helping us to prevent having those old age memory disease's.
Besides, you have a wonderful talent for the art of writing poetry, please don't stop,
Take care of yourself and your husband. Me and my wife have been together for 57 years now. God, I truly do not know what I would do without her. Have a wonderful life Janet and may God bless you and your family...Bill

Wow! 57 years is quite a benchmark. My first marriage lasted 32 years and Bob and I have been married 29 years in June. He has multiple issues with heart and kidney problems so our life is filled with medical appointments.
I appreciate your prayers for him and I will continue my prayers for you. I have a friend with MS and I know what she endures.
I hope we both can continue to write-you are correct in that it is therapeutic for me as well. But, time just gets away from me.

This is a beautiful verse in which you skilfully capture the majesty of the stag and that moment in time when you made this memorable connection with one of nature's most magnificent beasts. It reminds me of a scene in The Crown when the Queen was also stunned by the sight of a beautiful stag (but sadly that one was not saved from "the hunter's bow"). How I hate anyone who would dare kill one of these creatures! Isn't it truly wonderful that nature can impact on us to such a degree and bring a sense of calm and tranquility to an otherwise fraught and challenging life. And inspire such poetry! I do remember that scene from the Crown when the queen saw the beautiful stag. Sadly, that one did not escape the hunter's bow.
They are magnificent creatures and I was fortunate to live many years where they were prevalent. More does in my yard eating apples but then the occasional appearance of a stag.
