Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I enjoyed reading and am praying that this is your great grand uncle and he will finally be able to come to rest. Good luck with the contest.

That is a really interesting project your country is doing. Did they say how they would obtain DNA from bodies found where? Surely they won't open graves. My family has its own mystery. Two sisters argued over a postcard from a cousin and tore it in half. The part that survived said he would be in Hawaii at the end of the month of November and was assigned to the USS Arizona. He never came home, never sent any cards or letters, and is not listed with those on the Arizona memorial.

That's fascinating. I assume with my great grand uncle that portions of remains were found in the ground when building or excavating. They haven't given me any more details yet. They're definitely not from a grave because he has no grave or positive identification. I'll post an update once I hear more.

Very well-researched and very well written.
I found this quite fascinating reading.
War is truly hell. Those who start them should be punished, either here, or in the hereafter.
Good luck in the contest.

Wow, this was a compelling narrative of personal, national, and international history. The It was a good mix, allowing the reader to realize some of the scope of the war, but also allowing us to stay grounded in the personal costs of the war.

What a great story. I bet you went back and hunted up any material on your family you could find. I would be rumbly in my tumbly nervous and excited about the chance of being part of the reason your long lost relatives bones have a name. How wonderful. And you write with such feeling. :-) Karen

This is a well researched, documented, and detailed account of some of the battles of World War One and Two. I most enjoyed the fact that your detailed background history was turned into a first-person account of how the history affected you. Your opening statement about an intriguing request for assistance, captured attention and encouraged the reader to find out what type of assistance was requested. Well done. Best wishes in the contest.

I have been amazed at all that DNA has been able to uncover anr it seems to getting better all the time. I sent my sample away five or six years ago and now they are able to determine who I am related to and just how closely we are related. I think you are doing a good thing by going along with the process.

Hi there,
What an exciting piece of history! I can't wait to hear what you will find out when you send in your DNA. I know a lot of research went into this, and you've done a wonderful job of presenting it without being TOO wordy. GOOD LUCK in the contest~

Hello Navada,
what an interesting post. I think I would share your skepticism as well if I had seen such a request. I'm glad you had time to check it out further. When I've watched movies about the two world wars, I've wondered about the men who had fallen in those desolate battle fields. Who retrieves the bodies. I can't imagine not having the closure of knowing that a close relative had died. Without a body, it would seem that one would always wonder about the outcome, if perhaps they were alive somewhere injured, perhaps not remembering they have a family somewhere. Thanks so much for sharing this. I hope that you post the results when you find out.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom
